Cape Town - Three well known members of the gay and lesbian community have been honoured for their contribution in the fight for gay rights.

Sally Gross, Theresa Raizenberg and Midi Achmat were joint winners of the 2003 Galactic/Allison Masters Community Award. The award was the brain-child of Cape Town's gay and lesbian business community who felt there was a need for more role models in the community.

Gross, who was born a hermaphrodite but raised as a boy, began living his life as a woman in 1993. Since then she has been a campaigner for South Africans afflicted by the same problem.

She shares the award with Raizenberg and Achmat who were chosen by the judges for their active participation in various groups that fight for the rights of gay and lesbian couples.

These two have been involved in a relationship for quite some time and are among the founding members of the HIV/Aids action group, TAC.
