Gemstones stolen from Joburg museum

2013-07-12 11:34

Johannesburg - A collection of gemstones has been stolen from MuseumAfrika in Newtown, Johannesburg, The Star reported on Friday.

The collection, which included a sample of fool's gold and an old diamond-head drill bit, was donated to the city in 1927 and was reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of rand.

"The announcement of this theft had not been made public due to preliminary investigations being undertaken," said council spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane.
The theft was discovered on Wednesday.

Since the robbery, the second this year, the rest of the exhibit was taken off display and only fake cut glass diamonds remained for public viewing. Additional security measures had also been put in place.

It was unclear how the thieves made off with the gems and whether they were taken all at once or gradually stolen over time.

The glass on the display case was not broken and the only other access was through a locked and concealed door. Between 09:00 and 17:00 a security guard was posted next to the display.
