Johannesburg - ANC stalwart Frene Ginwala has suggested that the party's government should have achieved more during its time in power, the Sunday Independent reported.

"We should have done better. We don't deserve to be elected after failing to listen to the people," Ginwala was quoted as saying during a lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus.

"I'm ashamed that we have not reduced poverty and the tremendous damage it has caused," she reportedly said.

The newspaper reported that Ginwala had suggested that "there's some hope" in the fact that an integrity committee was established at the African National Congress's national conference in Mangaung.

"The committee [is] meant to restore values, look at the activities of tenderpreneurs, as you call it. I hope you will see the results soon."

Ginwala also reportedly said that the National Treasury had recently issued a list of people who were not allowed to be given government work.

"Now there's a mechanism. It is not going to solve the problem, but at least it is addressing it," she was quoted as saying.
