Johannesburg - A 13-year-old girl was shot dead on Saturday morning by two men in Protea Glen, Soweto, police said.

The girl and five of her friends, aged between 13 and 15, had gone to Thokoza Park in Rockville on Friday afternoon, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

While they were there, a group of boys travelling in a kombi allegedly approached the girls and invited them to a house.

"The girls allege that when they got to Protea Glen, the boys bought food and liquor. Then they tried to force [the girls] to sleep with them", Makhubela said.

"When the girls refused, they chased them out of the house."

He said the girls were walking in the streets around 02:00 when two unknown men appeared and began shooting at them, killing one.

Moments later a patrolling police car spotted the girls and took them to a nearby hospital, where the five were treated for shock.

A murder and kidnapping docket was opened, Makhubela said.

No arrests had been made yet.
