Girl, 2, nearly drowns

2012-11-09 07:28

Johannesburg - A 2-year-old girl nearly drowned in a swimming pool in Richards Bay on Thursday, paramedics said.

"Reports indicate that the family found the child at the bottom of the pool. After removing her from the water, neighbours started resuscitation," said Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the child still unresponsive and took over with advanced life support resuscitation.

After the child was placed on a ventilator, they transported her to the Netcare Bay Hospital for further treatment.

"After a lengthily resuscitation they managed to regain a spontaneous heartbeat. The child was moved into the intensive care unit where she remains in a critical condition," Botha said.

I'll probably be called insensitive, but parents have to be extremely careful. Accidents happen very quickly, often with tragic consequences. Unattended swimming pools, people using fuel to light braaivleis fires and kids unrestrained in cars are recipes for a disaster. There is no such thing as "it will never happen to me". We've had far too many kids tragically getting hurt or even killed this year. I will pray for her recovery.

      troy.leman.3 - 2012-11-09 08:28

You are not insensitive, but sadly just 101% correct.

  • thabzmadi - 2012-11-09 08:08

Wow, well done neighbours and paramedics, thank you for not giving up on the young girl. As for the parents/guardians, please dont leave children near unprotected pools alone!!!

Why would News24 staff write "Johannesburg - ........." yet the story happened in Richardsbay, which is in KZN. If the story happened in Durban, they will write "Cape Town - .........." as you read along, you will find that the story actually happed on the other side of the country. I would expect that they would write the closest city if they are writting about a story happened in small unpupular town.

      jcoetzee1975 - 2012-11-09 08:25

Its reported on from Jhb... is all I can think. Does not make sense to me either.

      petr.valcik1 - 2012-11-09 08:41

The first city is where the story is reported from - it's quite misleading till someone tells you though.

      mzamo.k.sokhela - 2012-11-09 08:55

If I see the first word says "Johannesburg", I think the story relates to JHB, its misleading. Rather put the city / town where the story happened, to me it does not matter where you reporting from, what matters its where the storry happened. If the story happened in JHB, start by "JHB", if Cape Town, write "Cape Town", etc!!

What happened to the laws, stating that a pool must be fenced off? There are far too many cases of children drowning in home pools that are not enclosed or covered. Hope she recovers and the parents take precautions to prevent a repeat.

      carolyn.dewrance - 2012-11-09 09:42

you said what I was going to say, Please people fence and net those pools, summer is coming and already we have had 2 reported near drownings this week lets not have any more. I just hope she recovers.

  • andrez.kolesky - 2012-11-09 08:32

Tragic. We pray that Hey-Lee does not become another number to add to the statistics. Hang in there to all involved ....

  • collet.letsoalo - 2012-11-09 08:41

I hope she recovers soon. However, what boggles my mind is how people can afford swimming pools and cannot afford safety nets.

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-11-09 08:58

Collet - Unfortunately, a lot of the time, its not that they cant afford the nets. People just overlook it, the laws have become too slack.

thoughts and prays with you Liegh-anne, we are all by you through this time

  • fran.aphane - 2012-11-09 09:49

How on earth does a 2 year old strays from her parents and lands in the pool. Some people are careless and bad parents that's it. I hope and pray that she makes it but as for the parents they don't deserve her. When you have a small child you don't let them out of your sight at all, you keep watch at them because they can get into any type of accident. I mean too many accidents like swimming pool drowning happens too often, and as for the reason why parents don't secure this pools I don't know. Don't think I am insensitive, I have kids, though am not perfect I know what kids can get up to. This just breaks my heart, just look at the case of Pipie Kruger? Is so heart breaking really.

      susan.economakis - 2012-11-09 11:18

It is impossible for us to know how it happened and to lable people as bad parents is just wrong. Things like this happens SO EASILY! Most parents love their children more than themselves and try their utmost to protect them and care for them. But accidents do happen. It is easy for a door or a gate to be left open by somebody, such as a servant, a visitor or antother child. I can only say - there, but for the grace of God, go I.

      meljuliette - 2012-11-09 11:43

Te sad trueth is she wasn't with her parents and her parent do der serve her. Best advise is to get the true story. Little hailey was a blessing a innocent soul. God bless her and all my prays are with u lee.

  • dean.grobler.3 - 2012-11-09 11:20

She has passed on, Lee we are all behind you and your family...

      susan.economakis - 2012-11-09 11:24

I am so sorry. This must be so heartbreaking for the family. May God be with them!
