Bloemfontein - A 3-year-old girl from Edenburg was allegedly assaulted and raped so severely by her aunt's friend that she is now fighting for her life in the intensive care unit at Bloemfontein's Universitas hospital.

According to a reliable source in the intensive care unit, her prognosis is very bleak.

"Paediatric surgeons operated on her on Monday as she had bleeding in the brain. Her brain is very swollen and there is definite brain damage. She was viciously assaulted and definitely sodomised," said the source.

"Her father has custody of her, but he left her in the care of his sister, 26, and her friend, 27. When the man took her to the local clinic, nurses realised something was terribly wrong.

"She was then transferred to Universitas."

Her aunt and the man were immediately arrested.

Both appeared in court on April 28. The aunt was released on R500 bail and the man remains in detention.

According to a police statement, they are investigating two charges of attempted murder, as well as charges of child neglect and rape.

Another two charges are being investigated, since the alleged assault and rape took place on April 20 and 26 respectively and neither the man nor the woman reported the incidents.

The girl's aunt supposedly didn't report the incidents because she was too scared, since she was also assaulted by the friend.

In the police statement, doctors say the girl's severe brain injuries can be attributed to her head being slammed repeatedly against a wall or floor.

'Worst case we've ever seen'

"We don't know if the child is going to survive," said the source, extremely upset.

"It's a terrible case for the intensive care staff, especially since we are not sure if we will be able to pull her through.

"It's definitely the worst case we've ever seen."

The man will appear in court again on Monday, when he will probably apply for bail.
