Girl, 6, in coma after gangsters' gunfight

2012-09-17 08:27

Cape Town - A 6-year-old girl is in a coma after she was caught in crossfire between rival gangs in Hanover Park and was shot in the head.

Eyewitness News reported that Leeana van Wyk was playing with a friend when the shootout occurred.

A resident who witnessed the incident said Leeana was playing with a ball when gangsters ran nearby and began shooting at each other.

A 7-year-old boy was also wounded in the shooting.

The little girl’s mother on Sunday said she wanted those responsible for the shooting to be punished.

“I wish there was justice,” said Louise van Wyk.

Hanover Park residents were angry about the incident with one person saying: “Our community  are [sic] not standing together in this place. Every time a child’s life ends, nothing is done.”

Two men have been arrested.

I hear the request from hellen - "send n the army" falling on deaf anc ears..! very sad over that little girl! nobody deserves this..!

The lives and property of the people of WC do not matter.Only the lives and property of the ANC controlled provices matter to the President

      paul.oxley.520 - 2012-09-17 10:39

The army is only ever sent in to protect the economic interests of those in power. The hypocracy and double standards practised by the ANC never ceases to amaze me. And yet the sheeple that they screw over will flock to the voting booths and endorse 'nore of the same' over and over.

      jennifer.d.martin.750 - 2012-09-17 10:41

You'll Send in the army for your mines but not for our children We see you clearly Mr Zuma AND the rest of the ANC who keep so quiet about rape crime corrupt tenders tree schools Deadly healthcare destruction of the food farming community cowboy police toilets without walls water with poison taxi gangs I could come up with more but it will ruin my day I know you have provided some services and some houses and some promises but you have stolen hundreds of BILLIONS OF RANDS money that should have helped the people but you bought champagne Did you really think of the people as it passed your lips you said you did I wonder what it was that you thought of the people. Bad Leaders. Bad.

      paul.nefdt - 2012-09-17 14:22

Zille calling in the SADF?? I always had a feeling that it's just a matter of time before she starts thinking like the old apartheid government. Doesn't the act (an illegal one for that matter) of calling in the army remind us of old apartheid times?? Yes there is definitely a need to address the problem immediately but calling in soldiers - who are trained (some say badly trained) to kill, not police - is not a good idea & never will be a good idea. The police should be better trained at policing & working with the community.

    Spineless morons!

  • trevor.pietersen.3 - 2012-09-17 08:40

Zoom Zuum you quite happy to deploy troops to protect mines but not to protect the children of Hanover park.

      msendi - 2012-09-17 09:06

Zuum Zuum have his own children and they don't go around shooting people. When are we going to blame the parents of these gangsters because they are the ones who failed to raise their children as law abiding citizens.

      jerome.fortuin.71 - 2012-09-17 09:31

      but they are black sir

      trevor.pietersen.3 - 2012-09-17 09:40

@ Mesendi.... are the miners "children"???

      msendi - 2012-09-17 10:00

      @Mr. Pieterson… no, they are not Sir…

      tasneem.basardien - 2012-09-17 10:51

Amen to that brother...wheres equality now huh zuma??

      sanda.mnyazi - 2012-09-17 13:18

Maybe the gangsters should stop shooting each other.....there problem solved

      adam.kemp.5851 - 2012-09-17 13:57

The ANC are only too glad to hear this! The thought of Zille failing to deliver in the WC is exactly what they want. Mr President: There are more pressing issues elsewhere this mining biz is just a display of the ANCs incompetence!

  • stefan.kruger.1297 - 2012-09-17 08:49

At the end , children is our future, and were not protecting them at all!!

  • Simon - 2012-09-17 08:53

The communities politics forgot and continue to neglect...

  • attie.mostert.9 - 2012-09-17 08:56

When is goverment and SAPS gonna start doing anything!!!!

  • frans.vanderpoll - 2012-09-17 09:11

Stupid miners are being monitored/guarded by the SANDF while innocent citizens are killed by these gangster. They are not worth to be called humans! They operate like lions - they hunt in a group. Get one isolated and see how much of a coward he really is.

      msendi - 2012-09-17 09:21

The gangsters don't come from space. If you fail to raise your kids to be the responsible citizens you are grooming a monster. Blame parents and communities before you blame the police and government…

      yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - 2012-09-17 09:41

Miners are guided yes,but they are monitored to be killed by ANCs police coz they are black, unfortunately these gangster wanna be barbarians are not black so the gov wouldn't dare kill 'minority' what can we do Johnny rules are rules

  • walter.lebza - 2012-09-17 09:36

Zille should stop asking for sa army while khayelitsha residents are available. Necklacing with burning tyre is the best, people's justice is the best solution. Do you want an army for this toothless rodents?

  • nadineelvina.francis - 2012-09-17 09:37

The criminals of this country own this country. When convicted murders become heads of correctional services and the SAP and we the people say nothing and do nothing about the state of affairs, and The people continue to Vote for the ANC- Nothing will ever be done.President Zuma will win Manguang because he has so stratgecically placed his allies within the ANC that he is not even a wee bit concerned about his future. Think about what you vote for in the next election, if you think that white people are your enemy you are sadly mistaken.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-09-17 09:41

The little girl shot in Hanover Park, Leeana van Wyk, is in a stable condition at Red Cross and not 'brain dead' as reported.

  • stuart.scully.31 - 2012-09-17 09:42

Vote for a government that cares! Vote D.A. !!!!!

      yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - 2012-09-17 09:54

Pity thishappened in the DA 'caring' city

      Christi Guest - 2012-09-17 11:13

@yangman - atleast they doing a hell of a better job than the ANC has in the past 18 years!!! they cant just stop every bad thing from happening - its within the person doing the crimes that need to stop. people can only do so much in order to try and reduce the crimes.

      irma.white.9 - 2012-09-17 14:16

At Yanman, at least they are speaking up about the problem instead of keeping quite about it like the ANC. They at least are asking for help, where the ANC just keep saying the country is safe.

      alex.marshall.944023 - 2012-09-17 14:38

Yes Yang, it did happen in the Cape. After there was a request for assistance from the ANC government. And after the army was sent to Marikana. The ANC government refused to assist the Cape with this problem because a crisis in the WC would serve their political agenda to gain control of the province. This little girls death is not only on those that's shot her but also on those who refused to help control the situation when they were asked, all in the name of political chess. The government does not care for their people but only for power and money. Such a tragic and sad story, that poor little girl and her family.

  • lutendovitamin.muneri - 2012-09-17 09:42

Oh xame I wish her speedy recovery

  • sarita.devilliers.5 - 2012-09-17 09:44

We need to blame the people protecting the gangs. They know who the gangsters are and what they did and protect them for whatever reason. We need each other to clean our streets and think twice when you vote. Its not about colour its about a beautiful safe country for all of us.A better life and future, but we need people that is not there just to enrich themselves.May God bless this little girl.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-09-17 09:45

These "gangsters" are just a bunch of moronic drug induced nothings with guns. Take them out of that environment and they will piss like puppies.. Toothless oxygen thieves.

  • yangmanfrom.sawthafriqa - 2012-09-17 09:50

Its sad but what's laughable is a fact that Zille is in Limpopo asking public protector to invistigate some suspecious tender bids awarded dubiously! Yet some claim she's a capable leader, the only thing she can do better is Deborah Patta's investigative journalism. She got no leadership skill, instead of crying foul for SADF do something,if you fail raise your hand. Oh but wait, you people only know how to complain, \your running blades were longer than mines\. \Anc is corrupt\. \How you driving\. \It was better in appartheid\. \Caster is a man\. \Div must go,Meyer must take over, now?\. \World cup2010 in Africa? No ways they don't even have roads there\ \lions walk on the streets in SA\It comes naturaly we see it in the UK n Australian media

      Christi Guest - 2012-09-17 11:09

and all iv seen in your comments is complaining - hypocrite!!!!

      irma.white.9 - 2012-09-17 14:18

You are a very blind man- at least Zille is asking about this. At least she is bringing the ANC to task about the problems. They aren't going to listen to the citizens, obviously. You should be THANKING her, if it weren't for the DA half the crap that gets sorted wouldn't be because the ANC are all talk and no action.

  • Christi Guest - 2012-09-17 11:04

You know what at the end of the day we cant point fingers at whos not doing their jobs properly, but who we can point fingers at are the people in charge and the ones doing the crimes. They complain about prisions being to full so people get away Scotch free or with a so called 'warning' they must bring back the death penalty. That way they save space and those doing the crimes will HOPEFULLY be a bit more aware of their consequences to their actions.

  • claudia.markgraaft - 2012-09-17 12:01

So when are they sending their lapdag Dan Plato to the family? He'll appear all loving and caring till his face appears in the Son and then the people of Hanover Park wil be left to fend for themselves again. It's a hopeless situation until election time of course, when they rally for votes in these drug and gang infested areas

  • Stormkaap - 2012-09-17 12:52

Mr Plato you must negotiate with these thugs.. thats your policy isnt it and where did it get you... Only one to deal with them.. bliksem them

  • lynette.venter.12 - 2012-09-17 13:30

To all the racists on this page - and putting racist comments on all the articles for that matter: People like that make me sick. We don't care if these kids are black or white or coloured or pink or purple or WHATEVER. They are JUST KIDS - Just children! They don't distinguish between black or white, they don't know apartheid - it's been 18years for pete's sake - GET A GRIP AND GET OVER YOUR RACE!

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-09-17 14:13

Where is our governments priorities? The tolls on Gauteng highways and fracking is nothing compared to the REAL issues in South Africa! They probably don't want to send the army because it's the DA- meanwhile there are people suffering at the hands of the criminals who are the ones really running this country! I hope the little girl recovers. Bring in the old PAGAT- no mercy!
