Cape Town - A 6-year-old girl wounded in the head during a gang shooting in Hanover Park, remains in a medically-induced coma, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Cape Argus reported that Leeana van Wyk was in the intensive care unit of the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town following surgery to stop the bleeding.

"Doctors are waiting for the swelling to subside to run further tests on her. She is in a stable condition," hospital spokesperson Lauren O'Connor-May said.

Van Wyk was playing with her friend Liam Davids, 7, when they were caught in the crossfire of a shooting between rival gangs around 18:30 on Saturday in John Down Walk.

Davids sustained minor wounds.

Two men were arrested in connection with the shooting.

According to the report, pupils at Morgenson Primary School prayed for the recovery of their "energetic and talkative" classmate on Monday.

Principal Envor Peterson warned pupils to be careful when playing around Hanover Park as the area was riddled with gangsters.

It is sad that people do not want the SANDF deployed in places like these where they are needed most.Instead the government is spending more money hunting for miners and Malema.
