Johannesburg - An 8-year-girl died on Tuesday when she was hit by a bakkie while crossing Spine Road in Westville, Durban, paramedics said.

She was on her own and it looked like she had been trying out her new school shoes ahead of the start of term on Wednesday, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the child was trying to cross the road outside the Sasol service station around 16:00 when she landed in front of a bakkie."

She died before paramedics arrived.

So sad, itdoesn't show parents in a favourable light when they can't ensure their children aren't safe until they reach school safely!?

Nonsense, no parents can (nor should they be expected to) monitor their children 24/7. You may think you can, but think about it and you would not be able to do anything else in your life. Presumably you don't even sleep so as to keep an eye on yours at all times?

@Leenert What kind of a parent lets their 8 year old child walk alone on main road. I agree that you cannot protect your children 24/7, but a "responsible" parent wouldnt allow that. @Rod.buchan It was the day before school started. And it was in the afternoon. The busiest time of the day for traffic

I know this stretch of road, there are low costs houses on both sides of the road and its a very BUSY stretch of road, just sad that a little one was knocked, people take chances no matter where you are, that is life, my condolences to her family on their loss of a precious life taken too soon. Metro need to patrol this stretch as speed has no limit on this road, especially with the 18 wheelers too. Some drivers drive 120 - 180kms along this stretch, i'm witness to it - they do not believe in the 60km limit imposed, and i know this from all the zap signs thrown at me when i don't drive fast enough for them
