Johannesburg - An 8-year-old girl was killed in Mankweng when a taxi knocked her down as she was crossing the R71, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Dorcus Seemela was on her way home on Sunday around 15:00 when she was struck, police spokesperson Moses Molepo said.

He asked parents and drivers to be more responsible.

"We are appealing to parents to escort children when crossing roads. We are also appealing to motorists to observe the speed limit."

The driver had been found.

"The National Prosecuting Authority [NPA] will decide whether the driver was negligent," Molepo said.
