Bela-Bela - The 6-year-old girl who allegedly shot and killed her best friend with her grandfather's firearm has told a counsellor that she's placed the events in the "delete box" of her brain.

Beeld reported on Tuesday that the girl saw the counsellor shortly after the incident on Saturday afternoon. She apparently said she had a picture of the events in her mind but immediately deleted them.

Sibongile Moima, 6, the daughter of the foreman of a private game reserve near Bela-Bela, was shot in the face while the children were playing in a farmhouse.

Her friend, whose name is being withheld due to her age, apparently found the firearm in her grandfather's wardrobe. It is still unclear how they found the weapon and how the shot went off.

Her grandfather, whose name is also being withheld to protect her identity, appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the negligent handling of a firearm. He was released on R500 bail and will appear in court again in September. He was reportedly so traumatised after the incident that he tried to hang himself on Sunday.

The grandfather declined to speak to the media on Monday, as did Sibongile's family.

A police spokesperson said the director of public prosecutions will determine whether he will be charged with murder or culpable homicide.

The family at whose home the shooting took place offered to assist with Sibongile's funeral costs. She will be buried on Saturday.
