Girls suffocate while playing in car

2012-11-19 08:46

Zeerust - Two cousins, aged 2 and 3, have suffocated in an old unused car in Zeerust, North West police said on Monday.

Spokesperson Colonel Emelda Setlhako said the girls were left in the care of their grandmother on Saturday morning when their parents went to work.

"The children were playing inside the car when they fell asleep. All the doors and the windows were closed and it was extremely hot that day," she said.

Setlhako said the mother of one of the girls arrived home and asked where the children were. The grandmother said she last saw them playing in the yard.

"The mother eventually found them motionless in the car... Their skin was badly damaged due to sunburn. We suspect that they died due to extreme heat and lack of fresh air."

Setlhako said emergency services declared the girls dead on the scene.

An inquest docket has been opened, she added.

Completely pointless and unnecessary deaths. How lazy was this grandmother? We should not judge others as we can all make mistakes but this was no mistake. This was laziness. If she didn't want to look after the children why not just say so. Sis; may you never find peace.

Despite how many stories u read in newspapers cant believe how common this tedency of leaving children in the cars is, This past saturday me and fellow shoppers @ Blaauw village complex in PTA North had to break windows of a car that had a crying&sweating baby in it, with de blaring alarm the father emerged to find his baby in the arms of a lady.*SHOCKING*

You it is very sad for these little ones may you rest in peace at such a young age.@ the Grand mother how could you have not gone and looked for them because i'm Damn sure if it was your own kids you would of looked for them to see if they were ok and yes at that age you look for them when they are no where to be seen or heard.

People should stop leaving kids in the care of grandparents. They should take responsibility for their own kids. We understand they had to work but surely could have made another plan. Grandparents are not as alert as they should be to be able to look after such young children and it is unfair to expect them to do so. Still it hurts at the way these kids had to die. May they rest in peace.

i feel sorry for the grandma, i don't think she intended for this to happen. may their souls rest in peace, also people should get rid of unused cars, fridges and other things that can be danger to kids.

Its sad that the kids died. I've heard so many stories of kids playing in old cars, Old fridges, etc... and dying... I'm not going to judge anyone, but i think that if your kids are going to play outside, there should be an adult watching them at all times.
