Cape Town - The Go George bus service has suspended its routes after four buses were set alight in George on Wednesday night.

The four buses were torched and two minibus taxis were impounded on Wednesday following violent protests believed to be connected with a transport route in the area, News24 reported.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said on Thursday that the situation has stabilised, but that buses had been withdrawn.

“We maintain a high visibility and presence in the area, but the situation has calmed down,” Pojie said.

No arrests have been made, but investigations are progressing. Pojie said 13 taxis had since been impounded.

The George municipality said in a statement on Thursday that the bus service would not operate for commuters and pupils. This was to ensure the safety of passengers and bus personnel.

“We are seriously concerned about those residents who won’t have transport to work and to school, but this situation has to be handled with great care,” said George Mayor Charles Standers.

“We can assure the public that we are consulting at the highest level about the events. We’ll keep the community informed via the media and social media and will give notice immediately when service recommences.”
