Gold smugglers apply for bail

Johannesburg - Five of the six cash-in-transit company employees accused of smuggling 50kg of gold worth R23m will apply for bail in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

On Thursday, The Sowetan reported that only one of the six men suspected of being part of a major gold smuggling syndicate was granted bail.

Matthys du Preez, aged 23, was granted R5 000 bail.

The six men were arrested by a Hawks investigative team at the Pumulani Toll Plaza on the N1 to Pretoria, the daily reported.

Five firearms were also seized.
