Elliotdale - A man has drowned after trying to assist the driver of a bakkie who tried to cross an overflowing river in his vehicle.

The driver, who was apparently trying to rescue a family member who was on the other side, was crossing the river at the Matshamba Location in Elliotdale, the Eastern Cape Health department said on Sunday.

"[The man who subsequently died] realised the driver was about to drown. In a bid to rescue him, he drowned,” said departmental spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

Kupelo said the driver of the bakkie was trying to cross the river to help a family member who was on the other side.  The family member had been walking home before he realised he was stranded due to the overflowing river.

The man who drowned was walking in the area when he saw the bakkie flooded and he went to assist. However, he subsequently drowned.

The driver survived the incident after escaping from his bakkie.  He was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.

A helicopter and ambulances attended the scene.
