Gallery won't take down The Spear - reports

2012-05-29 14:14

Johannesburg - Goodman Gallery has denied it agreed to remove The Spear from its website, reports said on Tuesday.

Goodman Gallery attorneys said they are not taking down the painting from their website, tweeted City Press' Adriaan Basson.

The gallery said the statements made by the ANC do not reflect the proposals made in confidential negotiations which did not result in a settlement, EWN's Mandy Wiener tweeted.

It was reported the statement comes via the Goodman Gallery's lawyers at the Film and Publication Board hearing.

Earlier ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe announced outside the gallery that they had agreed to remove the painting from their website.

they cant be forced to take it down - and the actual painting was defaced - but the person that put it an offer to buy the painting still wants it because even though it was defaced the meaning and message of the painting is still the same and out there for all to see. So i am happy to se it stay...

  • Brett - 2012-05-29 14:20

They should take it down so we all can get on with life. As we have seen it takes nothing to aggravate these people and we have far more important issues to solve than worrying about a President that can't control his sexual urges.

      Jon - 2012-05-29 14:40

i disagree brett, this has now become so much more than a stupid painting.this is now about the government thinking that they are bigger than democracy, bigger than the people and that they can do or say what they please but no one else may. i am fully behind the gallery for refusing to take it down, and for standing up for their constitutional rights

      Brett - 2012-05-29 14:41

This painting describes us as South Africans so perfectly. The rich are screaming freedom of expression and even if this land burns, as long as we have freedom of expression. The poor are making babies, being led by a man with uncontrolled sexual urges, marching in the streets instead of working to defend the weakest president this country has ever known. Shouldn't we all rather be working? How is there going to be a winner in this fight?

      Clayton Richard Delport - 2012-05-29 20:35

Brett what country do you live in? I see rich and mediocre and poor black and white people, my doctor is black and drives a new merc, the till guy at my local pick and pay is white and looks poor, and I see the exact same things in reverse, I don't think you actually know what your saying

@ Rowan Atterbury if the stupid apartheid survived all those years don’t worry about us taking over. Look at Zim figures, their economy is picking up and what destroyed them was not black empowerment it was inefficiency caused by corruption. Don’t think that whatever is black turns to disaster, 99.99% of people working on the farms are blacks they have the know-how. We can’t be held at ransom by a lame excuse that we will go the Zim route, if only whites are the best can you explain what’s happening in Europe? Under the leadership of the so-called stupid President in SA we never felt recession. So please go tell that white supremacy to someone who cares. I hope the next ANC leader will have the balls to push Economic transformation and land expropriation. We want a true representation of SA, if whites are 10% of the population it’s only fair to see 10% of the guards, maids, labourers, garden boys, bus drivers, unemployed being white.

      Malcolm - 2012-05-29 15:19

@Nena.Pride - Clearly you lack an imagination, there are far worse things that can happen than apartheid, and in any history book you will find many far worse things that have happened. Your fixation is pathetic.

      William - 2012-05-29 15:30

@Lerato. We are in a recession. Nobody said anything about black being stupid. If you give something to someone for free, they tend not to respect it (black or white)which is why expropriation will not work, not to mention massive capital flight & brain drain and...oh, why bother?

      Alan - 2012-05-29 15:48

@Lerato - Zim's figures picking up???? Dunno where you picked that 'gem' up from. Anyway - fact is that Zim did not need to destroy themselves (and many people's lives) to inflate the Swiss Bank account of a dictator. Nobody is te winner in Zim.

      Alan - 2012-05-29 15:51

Aaahhhhrrrgggghhhh *Slaps myself* for taking the bait and replying to a Troll.

      joshua.s.smit - 2012-05-29 15:51

this... makes no sense, how can you put economic FREEDOM and land expropriation together? lets take a look at what those 2 terms mean, as you dont seem to really understand... okay first lets observe the definition of expropriate (from ex·pro·pri·ate 1. to take possession of, especially for public use by the right of eminent domain, thus divesting the title of the private owner: The government expropriated the land for a recreation area. 2. to dispossess (a person) of ownership: The revolutionary government expropriated the landowners from their estates. 3. to take (something) from another's possession for one's own use: He expropriated my ideas for his own article. ok, now lets take the one specific part of this definition... "thus divesting the title of the private owner" and then read the following definition of economic freedom (from wikitionary) and tell me how they fit together: economic freedom (plural economic freedoms) The freedom to produce, trade and consume any goods and services acquired without the use of force, fraud or theft.

      Alan - 2012-05-29 16:12

eh Piet - what is a high school degree?

      Piet - 2012-05-29 16:24

@ Alan - Oops... Had a brain fart there. High school diploma I meant... But you get my point!

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-29 18:45

@aapokay, and the only way to get rid of idiots like you is guess what, dump you in a drain and flush you away permanently!

      EMPEROR.NKOSI - 2012-05-29 18:51

@Piet I'm very disturbed by the comment you made with regard to black people. This medium was intended for intellectual rigour not putting across demeaning racial comments based on 'assumptions' that have no relevance to the topic at hand. I guess it comes easy to assume that we lack "the brain power" when you do not know the extend of our grievances caused by apartheid. If knowledge serves me correct, those skills you mention can only be harnessed in educational institutions, but how is that possible when our right to 'quality education' has been violated. It is you who lacks "understanding" of what it means to be impartial! Assumptions are the mother of all F*#K-UPs! Just because i fall under the majority, it doesn't mean i think like them. Until such a time that the playing field is on the same level, it's only then that your comment might have 'some' form of relevance...

  • themba.ntuli - 2012-05-29 14:55

You know what after i did some thinking very intellectual thoughts not influenced by emotions, i think the gallery alone not citypress should for the sake of emotional arousal that the painting provoked remove the painting and send it to the german owner. i am not a fan nor supporter of the anc and mr zuma, i am concerned more about the stability of the country, futhermore this event would give extrimist and radicalist more ground to justify their actions, like the one's championed by malema and company.we are all south africans we all likely to die and be buried on this first reaction to the painting when i saw it was laughter but after today when i read sarah baartman wikipedia entry i am kind of thinking well mr zuma is not liked by most educated south africans because of cultural differences but this painting is unjust given our historical connections with colonialsm and so forth. just read sarah baartman biography when your emotions and mind is calm you will get my point.

      Harald - 2012-05-29 15:03

I understand your sentiment... but Zuma is just a man... with no moral compass, no integrity and generally disliked but the majority of South African's who feel skrewed since Thabo was kicked out... Zapiro said it best " if you want respect; earn it!"

      themba.ntuli - 2012-05-29 15:22

if zuma wants respect he must earn it, i like this statement a lot but you don't displine a child by beating thats what psychologist say after research studies. well i can't say zuma is a child its just a comparison. \r\nits just that the history of south africa does not allow certain indisuals from certain quarters of our nation to interpret this satire as a political joke they view it as an insult to their causes. take for example if an american political cartonist where to draw a painting of the rev jesse jackson as a slave working on a farm in the south? just imagine the uproar this will generate. i personally don't like zuma but this painting is dangerouse because the man is liked by the uncivilised majority that is the point i am making.

      melania.nel - 2012-05-29 15:25

Saartjie was a sad story, but you will have to dig deeper on the inet for more. Search ayand Mabula and tell me how his paintings aren't racist right now. I hate bretts painting and Ayanda's naked zuma. But I can't argue the fact that it still remains paintings. Saartjie was a human being and was treated horribly. She was not a painting. A lot of white people faught against apartheid and I personally know white people who voted ANC in the beginning, but what happened after that was just reverse apartheid.

      William - 2012-05-29 15:33

good point. But if we want to live in a free country, we must not allow ourselves to be bullied by others. Apartheid is apartheid whether it's black govt or white govt. We don't want it to come back here!!!

      Nicolaas - 2012-05-29 18:50

@DOMBA, what? you were thinking! Stop please because the moment your idiots start thinking, the whol world should start worrying. Will you now please take your marbles and go and play on the N2?

  • rankati - 2012-05-29 14:55

Lol....if one talks too much, often that person is slow to hear and understand what has been said.

  • Zebedi - 2012-05-29 14:58

Why did they not kick up a stink over Ayanda Mabulu's painting?

      Adil Smit - 2012-05-29 15:08

There is no political gains from doing that.

  • sian.okeeffe - 2012-05-29 14:58

If they did remove it from their own website it would do no good - thanks to the power of the internet, it has already been spread far and wide - even Wikipedia has a page up for it - like to see them try and take that down ...
