Johannesburg - A goods train transporting sulphur in plastic bags derailed close to the Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, on Saturday morning, Tshwane emergency services said.

"We are evacuating [people in the area] about 200m away from the train tracks because one of the plastic bags is [smouldering]," spokesperson Johan Pieterse said.

"It is not a flame but the plastic bag is smouldering and there is smoke. The smoke could be dangerous if inhaled."

It was unclear if shoppers in the mall were evacuated also.

No injuries were reported so far.

He said the train had eight carriages in total and derailed at around 9am.

The train tracks were closed and Transnet was on scene.

"It is going to be a long process and our specialist task force are on the scene," said Pieterse.
