Govt staying mum on jetsetting Motlanthe

2012-10-24 12:05

Johannesburg - The department of defence has declined to comment on a report on Wednesday that it leased a private jet, at a cost of several million rand, to fly deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

"We do not discuss the transportation of VVIP (very, very important people)," said defence spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini.

Eyewitness News (EWN) reported on Wednesday that Motlanthe was flown to Italy earlier this month on a private Boeing 727, despite the country having an "adequate air force fleet".

A photograph posted on a government website showed Motlanthe exiting the plane with his partner Gugu Mtshali.

EWN reported that the aircraft was owned by African National Congress supporter and arms dealer Ivor Ichikowitz.

It was the same plane used by President Jacob Zuma in his controversial shadow plane trip to the United Nations general assembly, in New York, last year.

It also reported that an official Air Force Falcon 50 was used to fly African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, last week, even though she was no longer a government official.

Dlamini confirmed that Dlamini-Zuma was flown in a state aircraft.

"The flight was an official task. It was a gesture to the AU and was a contribution by the South African government," he said.

In July, the government canned a R2bn deal to procure a new jet for the president.

and the "gravy plane" is still flying!

      frank.vankaapstad - 2012-10-24 12:27

This just doesn't make sense. How do you justify spending several million rand on a flight when Motlanthe and his entire party could have flown first class on SAA for a fraction of the cost? Yes it is inconvenient and a waste of time for the deputy president to queue at OR Tambo with the rest of the passengers, but are those extra few hours saved flying private worth millions in additional costs?

Never trusted him, dark horse, Be careful this man is dangerous.

      Billy - 2012-10-24 12:59

margie? like what? marikana? serious and shocking did happen, but they use it to further their careers. they didnt even care about what was happening at marikana until it was all over international news.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-24 13:00

So, there we have. Mothlanthe is no better than the rest of them - all on the gravy train/plane.

      kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-10-24 13:03

They should maybe use him for the next advertisement in that airline group when they sing about being a jetsetter lol. Lets face it, at the end of the day they are all cut from the very same cloth and only in it for money and power. Stuff the people, we are merely there to make them live like Kings.

@Frank - no VIPs do not mix with the plebs staning in line. They avail themselves of the luxury of VIP lounges (free booze included and get preferential boarding. Ask me I know.

      walter.tgsa - 2012-10-24 15:33

@Frank.vankaapstad: 1st Class Passengers don't have to queue at OR Tambo, don't worry, haha! And they get driven to the plane seperately. And (as far as I know, correct me if I am wrong...), there are also special lounges for them at the airport! But it is a waste of time for me too to queue etc, why should Politicians have so many priviledges? This is a developing country, why do our Politicians behave like they do?

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-10-24 18:42

@ walter.tgsa: never ever underestimate the size of an ANC politician's ego!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      lynette.venter.12 - 2012-10-24 13:36

Who do we go to to complain about OUR tax money being wasted, OUR hard working money paying millions for flights that could have been done within 100k by just flying SAA or something. Who do we go to to HELP US if it's our PRESIDENT signing off on this? Who's above him? There must be SOMETHING we can do - ITS OUR COUNTRY and OUR MONEY FFS!!?

  • robert.starke.98 - 2012-10-24 12:19

Its not their money - so who cares. Get the taxpayers to cough up again. Typical of the ANC led Govt.

  • Andrea - 2012-10-24 12:19

What does that make Juliarse? VVVVVIP? We have a country living in filth and starving to death, and then we have our very own globe trotters, there is just almost nothing in between anymore.

  • AlexWallerSA - 2012-10-24 12:20

Why is this not even surprising. The cANCer is the most mismanaged, incompetent, corrupt institution on the planet and all they seem to do is drive this once great country into the ground.

  • godesha - 2012-10-24 12:20

Honestly, did we expect a response from the government? They like to keep mum on a lot of issues.

  • gretchen.oswald.3 - 2012-10-24 12:21

Another lovely splash out with tax payers money! Its only several million Rands??

    TAX BOYCOTT

      tasneem.sattar.5 - 2012-10-24 13:08

bit harsh Jan. I think its more of a sentiment than an actual plan of action...lets not fight amongst ourselves, thats exactly what the problem has been all along. Divided we are weak. We, as tax paying citizens (black and white and in between; people and organisations), need to start sticking together and organising ourselves to co-ordinate various forms of mass action that will force this govt. to do its duty and carry out its mandate diligently and efficiently. If we could organise ourselves effectively as such, then withholding tax may not be such a pipe dream after all (even PAYE, VAT would be difficult, don't see a way around that).

      lynette.venter.12 - 2012-10-24 13:39

      HOW @ tasneem ?

  • briana.scott - 2012-10-24 12:25

I get outraged and can't figure out why they are still voted into power. The answer is the reason our education system is in such dire straits, the mass voters who continue to vote them into power live in rural areas, have no access to schools, actually, if the weren't bussed to voting stations they would even vote, they are uneducated, do not keep up with the news. These are the people that the ANC count on, because no educated person in their right mind, no matter what colour their skin can think the corruption and shocking spending of a taxes is okay. They need this country to remain uneducated or else they will lose power, why else are books landing up in rivers and burnt in warehouses. They count on the ignorance of the nation to remain in power to steal and starve the nation whilst they get fat from corruption. We need to fight for education, proper high standard equal to everyone in order to be able to breathe. Also, generally people who are uneducated are more violent in nature because they have not been taught to reason so are not able to manage the madness and it is far easier to lash out viciously because they know nothing else. How can we allow them to be jet setting all over the world whilst our poor starve, I pay my taxes and would far prefer my taxes go to housing, education and the poor than these fat government officials and their friends and family. It is just shameful.

      marc.schnehage - 2012-10-24 12:46

They are still in power because idiots like Michael vote for them. He still thinks that only whites support the DA!

      lizette.wilsenach - 2012-10-24 13:45

No matter who is in power, there should be a budget mos for EVERYTHING. I wonder why there is no opportunity for the 'people' or at least one delegate of each 'tribe' to decide how much money is to be spend on what. WE HAVE INTERNET! Everybody can be a part of discussions or voice their concerns or make suggestions, if only these things were made public. Democracy should not mean to chose one guy who from then on decide what to do with the money all of us contribute for things like roads, schools, police and so on, things that one or a few people can not do alone, it takes a country to get this done. If there is someone out there who can create a web page for me/us (for free).. I have a pretty good idea how it can work

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-24 12:26

Hope they remembered to stick the blue lights on the aircraft!

  • jeremy.thewasp - 2012-10-24 12:28

  • obadia.segwape - 2012-10-24 12:30

viva anc viva. agh crap.but i am still going to vote for them cause i just dont have a choice EISH

      amused.reader.7 - 2012-10-24 12:37

I guess an appeal to vote for any other party will fall on deaf ears. (but that is the only way you will change the ANC). Poltical parties always go through a process of renewal when they are elected out, it is essential to multi party democracy. If you vote for the ANC then you have voted IN FAVOUR of this crap and have no right to complain, when more of the same innevitably follows. If you dont have the moral courage to do what you clearly know is right, then spoil your ballot paper in protest, but dont vote for these idiots

      J.Stephen.Whiteley - 2012-10-24 12:45

What do you mean /you don't have a choice/? Of course you have a choice, vote for any party except ANC. Kathy

      dave.hardman - 2012-10-24 12:55

If you are not happy with the ANC don't vote. You don't HAVE to vote! If you want things to get better, give it some thought and vote for a party that cares

      Erna - 2012-10-24 12:56

Yes you do have a choice. You don't have to vote for the DA. Vote for any other party and the anc will not be so powerful, that they can just "decline to comment" when spending our money for their own private pleasures.

      briana.scott - 2012-10-24 13:16

we all have choices, we just have to be big enough to make the right one, not only for us but for the children. Can you really justify leaving them a crap land because - Eish, you had no choice. That is just silliness.

      obadia.segwape - 2012-10-24 13:23

if we had two parties maybe like da and anc only i would vote for one of them so y waste a vote for a party that wont win

      lorain.maseko - 2012-10-24 13:47

@ obadia.segwape Right you are my brother,we just do not have a choice, I wont be voting in the same camp as white supremists, heel no,that would be condoning it and that would be like spitting on the graves of people like Steve Biko, cant be done.

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-24 15:09

Terrible when your cowardly fear overrides common sense and morals. What a pathetic excuse for a human being if that is the case.

      briana.scott - 2012-10-24 15:51

it is people like you and your sister here that allow for this madness. you have the crazy mind to say that it doesn't matter what they do you will vote for them anyway, your children can starve, your mother raped and you go hungry, but that is okay let the fat pigs have it all. You deserve your fallout. It will come to you and yours, this is a very sad way to think. You should be strong enough to stand up for yourself against both white and black powers, instead of letting anyone - no matter their colour treat you and yours with such disregard!

      bothabibi - 2012-10-24 23:25

@ lorain : your government is spitting on people like steve biko's graves! they are just as bad, actually worse than the white regime! they watch the majority of their people starve and couldn't care less! south africa is 1 of the countries with the widest "gap" between rich and poor with both sides consisting mainly out of black people.

      John - 2012-10-25 00:22

Obidia a vote for another party undermines the arrogance of the ruling party and restores a balance of power!

  • Eterni80 - 2012-10-24 12:32

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-10-24 12:33

What do you expect??? This is the ANC, The most corrupt party. They only wanna live the high life. They dont care about wasting tax payers money. They dont care about there own ppl and its just gonna keep getting worse so long as they keep there ppl uneducated and handing out free t-shirts, half loaf of bread and soup just to stay in power and waste even more money

  • rita.jaquire - 2012-10-24 12:35

Dear Mr. Deputy President, Your people are hungry and cold. Please stop jetting around, create jobs, build houses, school children and secure futures!

  • jason.marriott.75 - 2012-10-24 12:35

We don't discuss what we spend your money on! I actually don't have an issue with top officials on jets for diplomatic responsibility's but surely his wife would have to pay her own way.

      Morné Els - 2012-10-24 12:41

Why should his partner pay her own way? You dont pay per passenger when you charter an aircraft. With or without her,it would cost the same.

Didn't the report say /partner/? He probably took her to Italy for a dirty weekend. Kathy

My opinion these comments are rediculars because such information should never be available to the public as it put the whole country's security in a risk of terrorists attack. I'm not denying the fact that money is being used carelessly in some instencies but as far as security and defence is concerned we dont need a repeat of the Chris Hani saga

      lynette.venter.12 - 2012-10-24 13:52

It wouldn't have made headline news had he just flown SAA. No one would have known! It's BECAUSE he's trying to be extravagant, that he's drawing attention to himself and WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW! Do you pay tax? If not just shooosh

The president and his cohorts keep living the high life at our expense and the people who voted for them and keep voting for them don't benefit from our hard, honestly earned money which the government demands from us and claims it needs to alleviate poverty and uplift the poor. How is our paying for a private jet a strategy to uplift the poor?

  • philas.ntuli - 2012-10-24 14:13

      JamesMWood - 2012-10-24 14:24

Really, transparent? Why do you think they want the protection of state information bill? Its so that we don't find out about tgese things! Oh and by the way government was only forthcoming on the info once they had alreaady been exposed! Not so transparent now are they!

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-24 14:56

Because we have the intelligence to see what they're doing and we would like it to stop.
