Johannesburg - A man was arrested in Grahamstown on Tuesday for possession of dagga and Mandrax, police said.

"He was walking along the street with his two children when he saw a police car drive past and come to a stop. He just panicked and ran," Captain Mali Govender said.

The two children, aged five and two, started screaming and police calmed them down before asking locals to look after them, she said.

They chased the man and he jumped into a muddy ditch. He was arrested after a struggle, still clutching a packet containing 52 Mandrax tablets, and about three kilograms of dagga.

The drugs had a street value of about R3 000.

He would appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
