Granny, 80, raped in KwaZulu-Natal

2013-07-24 11:05

Durban - An 80-year-old woman has been raped in her Esigodini home in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The woman was resting in her bedroom on Monday when she was raped by an 18-year-old neighbour, Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said.

He and the woman's grandson had been watching television, but he disappeared when the 15-year-old went to make tea.

"It is alleged that he then went into his grandmother's bedroom and found the neighbour raping his grandmother," Jeevan said. He called for help.

Neighbours assaulted the youth.

"During the assault, the suspect mentioned that he and the grandson previously raped the granny together," said Jeevan.

Both were arrested and would appear soon in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court.

The youth was in a serious, but stable condition at a local hospital.

The woman was receiving counselling.

Drugs is what is wrong. No discipline is what is wrong . Lack of respect for elders is what is wrong - its is important to discipline our children. You dont have to be a violent lunatic- But a much needed reprimand - during a childs formative years is very important. Like you I am concerned about our future . Poloyatonki its great to hear a good comment from you

      Jambo Lucille - 2013-07-24 13:10

I would like to blame the government for everything, and to some degree they are responsible but ultimately: STOP HAVING CHILDREN YOU CAN'T AFFORD, then neglect them, bring them 'up' with no morals or decency or respect to life. Having left them to scavenge the earth no better than a beast, uneducated, dirty, demanding and rotten to the core. If you can not give your child a decent upbringing - use a condom, tie a knot, do something - our children/elderly should not be predators to these savages!

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 13:22

Castration does not prevent these criminals from committing other crimes such as murder. There is only one way to prevent people like these from ever committing the same, or worse crimes again and that is the death penalty. If criminals know that they WILL be caught, and that they WILL get the death penalty, carried out very soon after sentencing, then it will be a deterrent to other people who may consider committing crimes like these.

      Siyabonga Biyela - 2013-07-24 11:36

Sickening yes. But how would you stop a boy from raping his granny? You can only put him in jail, afterwards. Meanwhile another sicko elsewhere will be doing the same

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 13:30

Siyabonga, one day a politician or a psychiatrist for a parole-board will decide this boy is all fixed up and fit to be released. Then he does the crime (or worse) again. The only certain way to stop him committing again is the death penalty, carried out very soon after sentencing. The certainty of getting caught, together with the death penalty is also a very good deterrent for potential criminals. People who say the death penalty is NOT a deterrent have not read the scientific and anecdotal literature on the subject. They are also ignoring the evidence of countries with harsh measures against crime.

      Siyabonga Biyela - 2013-07-24 14:16

Lorna, at this level of savagery that we witness daily in this country, even those vehemently opposed to the death penalty maybe tempted to cross-over and start advocating for its return! Not because they believe it would serve as a deterrant, but specifically because it would serve as an appropriate retributive action. And to ensure they never get a chance to terrorise innocent people ever again

  • bob - 2013-07-24 11:24

Zuma leadership - that's right folks - keep voting for your disgusting ANC!

      Nontuthuzelo Fergie Ka Jolingana - 2013-07-24 12:38

realy thou this attacking of zuma is getting stale.

      bob - 2013-07-24 13:34

its not an attack, but a statement, can you see where the problem is?

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 13:40

It is very true that sicko's will always exist, and that they will always commit atrocious crimes. However South Africans of all races have been calling for the death penalty, and generally harsher sentences, keeping of prisoners for their full term in jail and more effective capture and trial of criminals. Those things are what the government IS responsible for but they do not listen to us, and they are failing everyone by not doing them. Not to keep on beating the same old drum, but if the ANC government used the taxpayers money on crime prevention - there are some excellent schemes that have been tried in other countries with success - instead of spending money on themselves and bodyguards and fancy trappings of power, then we would have safer lives.

  • Zoheb Hassan - 2013-07-24 11:24

What the bloody hell!! These dirty dogs rape toddlers and old defenceless grannies!! This country is sick! Because zuma got away with rape now they raping everyone those sick dogs!

      Zoheb Hassan - 2013-07-24 13:20

Anc supporter hey, zuma has ruined this country!!! Killers walk free, rapist walk free!! He is responsible for this! The buck stops at him

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 13:51

Ya Lyndah, you do have a point, but so does Zoheb... Zuma set the example and got away with it. Now others think that is fine. We need some effective crime PREVENTION schemes in this country. There have been some tried out in other countries which worked very well. They addressed such things as spotting potential criminals very early - in childhood usually - (it is known that people who commit serious crimes almost always start with less serious ones) and supporting families who are struggling to survive - not with money but with work and skills education and so on. Getting children into schools - truancy is often the start of a criminal career and (surprisingly) sports programs - people who are playing sport usually unite and identify with their communities and while playing or training for games, they do not plan crimes. Apparently when all of these things are applied at the same time to targeted communities, then crime rates fall. However all of these things are expensive and ... well ... there's Nkandla to pay for isn't there?!

      Bheki Dladla - 2013-07-24 14:48

i also fail to understand how all this is blamed solely on Zuma. didnt he go to trial for that rape case and was found innocent?? do not get me wrong people but some of us need to start to put things into better perspective and who knows some things can actually change. the teen was in the wrong when he made a clear decision that he will go and help himself with the innocent granny of which a decision was not propelled and supported by the ANC. the fact is that this problem has existed and will exist until such time that parents actually start to raise their kids well and teach them the right principles and values about life. what the boy did is sick and shows that he lacks respect for the elderly of which i think is the reason why some good neighbours assaulted him. you spare the rod, you spoil and child. as for this being the ANC's fault, i really do not agree.

  • Obakeng Obakeng - 2013-07-24 11:51

Castration is the only weapon to addres this problems

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 14:00

Thulasizwe and Obakeng, I used to think the same way as you guys but I recently read some books about crime and apparently that doesn't help (though they cannot rape, they can still do sexual assault, murder, torture and so on)... I'm afraid that what I got out of all my reading is that the ONLY way to prevent people like this from committing crimes again is the death penalty, carried out very quickly after sentencing. Even long sentences in jail don't help either because - like Dean Munsamy, who raped and murdered 10 year old Natasha Jeenabhai - they get released from jail after just one third to two thirds of their sentences. Free to commit awful crimes again and again.

  • Willow Segole - 2013-07-24 11:53

  • Noshika Singh - 2013-07-24 11:53

Reading this makes me sick... what on earth provokes a child to rape a helpless granny? "During the assault, the suspect mentioned that he and the grandson previously raped the granny together," What kind of deranged people walk the streets of this county?!

  • Steen Phatse - 2013-07-24 11:58

Now i understand why cosas want to castrate these idiots 'sies at 15yrs and raped an 80year old granny, community should have finished them they are sick!

  • Mahomed Saleem Khan - 2013-07-24 12:02

I just hope the law locks him up for good. The same apply to the grandson if found guilty. The charges should be for both rape cases for he has admitted raping the women in the past. We cannot have these sick people in our communities.

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 14:06

Sadly, "for good" doesn't mean very long these days. I have just read about a guy called Dean Munsamy who raped and murdered a little 10 year old neighbour. He has been paroled after only 18 years of a 30 year sentence. He is certainly able to commit another similar or worse offence, and has shown no remorse for his first (? maybe) crime. The books I have been reading recently show that certain types of offenders are very unlikely to go straight without reoffending again, and sexual predators are particularly liable to carry on doing what they do. Death penalty. The only sure solution.

  • Colline Maule - 2013-07-24 12:02

hand them over to the community, it's the only way justice will be served.

  • Nosiphiwo Matsalo - 2013-07-24 12:03

  • Edward Radingoana - 2013-07-24 12:08

I think the guys might have drunk Imbiza which drove their blood possibly wild and reversed the granny 's appearance to their age, sis KZN. If I had a granny she was not going to put her foot there where murder is fashionable as well in the Sugarcane.

      Beeg Balaboy - 2013-07-24 14:04

'reversed the grannys appearance to their age?' is this imbiza the elusive fountain of youth or some age reversing cream Ponds developed?

      Lorna Murdoch-Eaton - 2013-07-24 14:09

Yes, I noticed that too. How would anyone down-vote those posts? I also wondered if that means they condone the crimes. Good question Nontuthuzelo!

      Bheki Dladla - 2013-07-24 14:58

Nontuthuzelo and Lorna, the most unfortunate truth is that we will always have such people who will dislike our well understood disgust to all this and the worst part is that they will never ever give us reasons as to why they dislike our comments which leaves me with a two word answer - They're demons. finish n klaar

  • Aubrey Christie - 2013-07-24 12:47
