Guard gunned down during armed robbery

Johannesburg - A security guard was shot and killed while another one was injured during a robbery in Nyanga, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

The two security guards were shot while they were escorting a bakery van in Noxolo Street, Crossroads, police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana said in a statement.

"It is alleged the victims were inside a vehicle when two armed suspects approached and shot at them, one security guard, a 45-year-old man, was fatally wounded and the second one, a 42-year-old, was injured and rushed to hospital," he said.

Both their firearms were taken during the robbery.

Kinana said the driver of the bakery van managed to drive off when he heard gunshots.

Police were investigating cases of armed robbery, attempted murder and murder.
