Guard held after firing at strikers

2012-10-11 20:20

Johannesburg - A security guard was arrested for attempted murder in Brits on Thursday after he fired rubber bullets at striking workers, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said workers at the Pat Cornick company were on strike demanding a salary increase.

"They were picketing at the company's entrance and attempted to gain forceful entry," he said.

"The security guard assigned to the premises retaliated by shooting at the crowd with rubber bullets, injuring one person."

The security guard accidentally hit the rear window of a police car twice.

He was arrested for attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

Ngubane said the police had gained control of the situation and were keeping watch.

This is where it finally gets out of control. The law enforcers are being penalised. It doesn't matter whether they are private security or official police.

In the old days a "State of Emergency" was called and the army went in and sorted them out within a day or two! Sad thing is, we dont even have an army. They are as useless as the spear under a showerhead! Folks, if you have kids, and qualifications, and many of you do have, get out!

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-11 21:00

I would have to agree with old desert rat here if you have a qualification get out now, if you have the means send the kids now, 'maak a plan, en maak dit goe' even if you don't have the means make a plan, you should have had one already.

      Havokreeka - 2012-10-12 07:30

Surely if it was "attempted murder" he would have used real bullets?

      darryl.maze.5 - 2012-10-12 08:46

Well what do you expect sean.wolf. This country is run by uneducated criminals. They look after there own. The law enforces and civilians are the weak targets here.

  • sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-10-11 20:29

Does the attempted murder charge relate to the strikers or the policemen? Sounds to me like he was doing his job, his shooting skills might not amount to much - he must have been terrified!!

  • Lyndatjie - 2012-10-11 20:30

This is stupid! He did what he was employed to do against a bunch of people who said that they would DIE for their cause... and now HE is being penalised? South Africa legal system SUCKS!

      Roslyn Naidoo - 2012-10-12 00:14

Gotta watch out for those killer rubber bullets.

  • altusvanzyl - 2012-10-11 20:34

What the hell? And if they throw my car with stones is that also attempted murder??

  • Gatvol Griet - 2012-10-11 20:35

Yeah right, miners may hack people to death, including policemen, bu God forbid you damage a window or fire a rubber bullet to protect yourself!!!

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-10-11 20:36

Yup, African justice, you are buggered which ever way you turn.....

  • harold.parsons.37 - 2012-10-11 20:39

Brigadier Thulane Ngubane must be a union boss that is why he acted so quickly and would not allow the gaurd to do his job

  • civil.moabi - 2012-10-11 20:44

this is really a joke or maybe the police should explain what the security officer should have done

  • Pete7930 - 2012-10-11 20:45

I totally agree with his arrest. He should not have used rubber bullets. This is unacceptable. They should have been live rounds!!!

      desertratbkf - 2012-10-11 20:51

Actually no! Every day will become another public holiday in remembrance of those slaughtered! Whats the bet, there WILL be a Marekane day! Make as many public holidays as possible so we dont heef to wek!

      vonanijaphta.ramashia - 2012-10-11 21:19

      daniel.machet - 2012-10-11 21:44

      daniel.machet - 2012-10-11 21:44

  • es.vl.9 - 2012-10-11 20:46

Does this mean that when police use rubber police they are attempting to murder those whom they aim at?

      daniel.machet - 2012-10-11 21:45

gotta love them rubber police... hurtling themselves at crowds

  • Partiboy - 2012-10-11 20:47

Only in SA. What exactly is in a guards job description? To protect and serve ofcourse, or is that the police? Either way we live in a messed up society.

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-10-11 21:25

Job description: do not protect your live give it up to f*2 @ strikers.

      lol classic

  • majwarha.balakisi - 2012-10-11 21:01

Yininale. What would have happened if those people gained the force entry thy were trying to gain before the Guard fired at them?

  • Earl O Tool - 2012-10-11 21:06

so rubber bullets kill? why not charged with assault with intent.

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-10-11 21:22

Why charged at all. Should the guard waited until he was killed and then came back to haunt, the hell out of the strikers?

  • johnny.potatoes61 - 2012-10-11 21:11

    Geez, what a k**k call

  • rouen.heiberg - 2012-10-11 21:24

  • kingKanete - 2012-10-12 01:10

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-10-12 02:40

The guard did what he was paid to do..protect the premises of his employer after strikers tried to forcefully gain entrance!! Only in SA..where the wrong doer has more rights than the law abiding citizen !! Dumb sh*t ANC !!

  • siphom.mnguni - 2012-10-12 06:21

A security-guard was arrested on a charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property for accidental shooting the rear window of a police van twice, so goes the story. If it was the April 1 I would say very nice Fool's day story to wake up to, but, hey, it's October. Since when firing a rubber bullet to strikers constitute murder or attempted murder? As if that was not ridiculous enough, there comes a ludicrous charge of malicious damage to property a charge that could only be committed on intention, not by accidentally shooting as the story goes. This guy needs a good to help him sue their pants off and get enough money to retire comfortable and never work a day in his life. He would join the elites maybe take some golf lessons. Khulubuse's it seems you have a challenge in this guy.

      gail.allanlutz - 2012-10-12 08:46

If the police are citing malicious damage to property and were close enough to have their back window of car smashed - my question is.....WTF were they doing whilst the poor security guard was trying to prevent an angry mob from entering. Those cops would have sat there and watched the mob beat the guard to death and then claimed they witnessed nothing. Disgusting!

  • archangel.zerachiel - 2012-10-12 06:27

WHAT BULLSHYTE!!!!! This man was only doing his job. The Police ARE A JOKE!!! They should have been arresting those strikers trying to gain forceful entry.

  • Michael Kleber - 2012-10-12 06:45

Come on SAPS what about all the trucks that were burnt and people killed by striking truck drivers ? no arrests . pathetic

  • gail.allanlutz - 2012-10-12 08:42

How can it be attempted murder with rubber bullets! Bloody idiots. So someone does the job he is employed to do (protect the premises) and the rights of the strikers (unprotected) take precedence. OMG - I cannot believe what I am reading.

  • darryl.maze.5 - 2012-10-12 08:52

WOW!!!! So let me get this straight. These SAVAGE strikers go out and destroy properties, burn trucks, kill one truck driver, set another driver alight and not one arrest has been made?????? WTF!!!!! Yet a security guard fires rubber bullets because strikers were trying to gain forceful entry and he hit one savage striker he gets charged with attempted murder and malicious damage to property. WTF!!!! Are you kidding me really.

  • wackidmaledu - 2012-10-12 09:28

    ...yep..this is south Africa!!!

  • riaan.roetz - 2012-10-12 10:20

WTF! he does his job and get's locked up for attempted murder, what about the anarchist strikers...oh wait this is NSA, MY BAD, CARRY ON!

  • christopher.thaylan - 2012-10-12 11:37

what was this man supposed to do? Stand there and wait for these strikers to beat him to death? Let me guess- then we would have some MP visit his home and give his condolences to his family and the labour organisation would also distance themselves from the murder of a man who was just defending himself. We see through all these Laws that afford more rights to criminals than us law abiding citizens.
