THERE was commotion in Allandale on Saturday afternoon after a security guard shot a man in the leg after an alleged mugging.

The stain of blood still remained on the pavement outside ContiPartner, a tyre fitment centre in Salford Road, after an incident on Saturday where a security guard, employed by Tigerforce Security, shot a man allegedly in self defence.

According to Tigerforce Security director Faizal Khan, who spoke on behalf of his employee Eric Zondi, a former ContiPartner employee came to the shop after it closed on Saturday to demand his belongings.

“Zondi said he was rattling the door and shouting,” Khan said.

The man allegedly took Zondi’s belongings kept near the door and tried to flee.

According to Khan, when Zondi tried to stop the man, he “put his hand behind his back as though he was pulling out a gun”.

Zondi, who thought he was in danger, pulled out his firearm and shot the man in the leg.

“With the amount of armed robberies happening these days, my guard was under the impression the man had a gun so he acted in self defence,” Khan said.

“The guards are on high alert especially since the [armed robbery] incident at Mountain Rise”.

Khan was referring to the house breaking incident where 17 armed men attacked and robbed a home owner in Mountain Rise, which escalated into a shootout between the robbers and members of private security companies last month.

According to police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, a case of attempted murder was opened at Mountain Rise police station for further investigation. Zondi was arrested and charged with attempted murder after the shooting.

He is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.

The victim was taken to Northdale Hospital for further treatment.

All attempts to contact the victim yesterday were futile
