Durban - A security guard was stabbed to death during an attack at a boutique bakery in Durban on Tuesday night, paramedics said.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that paramedics received reports of an emergency at the Continental Bakery in Morningside.

"Medics rushed to the scene and they found that a security guard had been stabbed repeatedly and had succumbed to his injuries before anything could be done for him," he said.

Jamieson said that the man had been stabbed in the chest and back.

"Severe chest trauma from penetrating wounds meant that the man died within minutes. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene."

A police source, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said that the suspect had been identified.

"Our investigation has begun and we have a solid idea who the suspect is. We are confident that an arrest will come soon. We are certain that this was not an attempted robbery."
