PICS: Deadly Durban taxi rank shoot-out

Durban - At least five people were killed at a hostel in KwaMashu on Wednesday, not long after three people were gunned down at a taxi rank in Durban.

“This [Wednesday] morning at 07:00, an unknown group of men entered block A95 in the KwaMashu hostel and opened fire at occupants of one of the rooms,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker.

Three of the occupants in the room died instantly and one died whilst receiving medical attention.

The body of another victim was found lying outside the hostel, taking the toll to five.

Another man is in a critical condition.

A 9mm pistol was found next to the body lying outside the hostel.

“It is suspected that he was one of the attackers and was killed by an unknown person as he fled the scene,” said Naicker.

The incident comes just after a shooting at a taxi rank in Brook Street, Durban, about 20km away from KwaMashu.

Three people were shot dead and six people were hospitalised, News24 reported.

Paramedics said they had never seen so many automatic weapons on a scene.

Naicker said that at this stage it is highly unlikely that the two incidents are related.
