Johannesburg – An investigation was under way on Wednesday after the Department of Arts and Culture's website appeared to have been hacked.

An self-styled Algerian "hacktivist" group is believed to have claimed responsibility.

"We are looking into it," said the department's communications director, Mack Lewele.

The site, www.dac.gov.za, is no longer accessible, but a Google search shows a message that reads, “Hacked by Admirale_Mouh…YOU’VE BEEN HACKED ISLAM HACKER ALGERIAN HACKER” followed by an Outlook e-mail address.

According to an article on thecitizen.com in the US, Admirale_Mouh is believed to be an Algerian group. The website reported that its news server had been hacked in March this year by the group who posted a message claiming to be hacking sites to raise awareness about Palestine.

Further details were expected to be released later.
