Hands off Christmas, protesters say

2012-11-10 22:12

Johannesburg - A group of Christian demonstrators handed over a memorandum to Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor on Saturday to oppose a proposal to remove Good Friday and Christmas as public holidays.

"Hands off Christmas and Good Friday," said the group outside Constitution Hill in Johannesburg.

The group of around 100 protesters which were led by head of the African Christian Democratic Party's Reverend Kenneth Meshoe delivered a memorandum of understanding to Pandor to oppose a motion by the Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

The commission was allegedly exploring the idea of requesting government to scrap Good Friday and Christmas from the national calendar. They alleged that the celebrating of the two Christian holidays discriminated and excluded other religious denominations.

Reading the memorandum, Meshoe said they did not believe the two holidays discriminated against any religion.

"According to Statistics South Africa, Christians make up 79.5% of the country's population," said Meshoe.

He said the existence of these two holidays on the calendar showed the majority's standing.

Pandor told demonstrators that she had not yet received any enquiries from the commission, and urged them to "prepare for a jolly festive season".

The ANC will still use it as holidays, but with different names, the bloody idiots, Leave us to enjoy our Holidays, you have taken everything away from us.

So South Africa will continue to use the International Gregorian Christian calendar, but scrap the religious holidays associated with it, sigh.

I am sure she was quoted out of context. I mean imagine advising the JSC that thhey may not close on Christmas, as it is NOT a holiday. The day is NOT a religious, as many of us know, but the traditions are well endowed, and should be left alone.

      Nigel - 2012-11-11 08:01

Is there nothing else of more importance to concentrate on in this country, other than to see how pis#$d off you can make people? Christian holidays are not and never have been any problem in this country. Please attend to the many other very serious problems this country faces idiots.

      marcusvandermerwe - 2012-11-11 15:43

I really wonder who is really behind systematically removing Christian holidays and prayer from schools? Next thing you know church services will be too offending to non-christians. So where does the line get drawn?

      Bobbycat - 2012-11-12 13:23

SA is a Constitutional Democracy that protects the rights of minorities. For all those out there like Meshoe, saying "we're the majority" so "we must have our way" ... get over yourselves. The majority is under 40 years old, the majority is right handed, the majority is black, the majority is straight, the majority is female, and yes.. the majority is Christian. Being in any of these majorities give you no more or less rights than anyone else - as guaranteed by our constitution. As for the holidays, let them be challenged, let the issue go right up the chain to the constitutional court and if you respect the SA Constitution then at the end of the day you shouldn't have an issue with the outcome.

      eddy.deepfield - 2012-11-12 17:44

South Africa is a secular state, therefore there should be NO official religious holidays. Christians, Jews, Hindus and Muslims can celebrate their own holy days on their own. Christians can apply for leave and indulge there own imbecility, just like the other superstitious people have to do.

      jmlongwe - 2012-11-12 20:32

So many people dont know Christianity borrowed a lot from pagans, even going to church on a Sunday is a pagan thing. Real Christians used to go to church on a Saturday the Sabbath.

      jmlongwe - 2012-11-12 21:04

These Christian protesters should have kept quiet and this whole thing would have been swept under the carpet, now they make noise and give those others publicity, now Pando really needs to look into it now, foolishness. I'm not saying sweeping things under the carpet is good, its just that people want to threaten our day off.

Remove all the public holidays as they are just disruptive to productivity and are really just a waste of time. As Hitler told the good people at Auschwitz " work sets you free " and us South Africans should take these wise words to heart. Nothing good ever came from sleeping late or lounging around all day, the government should make Saturday a normal working day and Sunday a half day, and then scrap all public holidays and you will see how this countries economy will grow and grow.

Blackyoungandangry why are you angry and at who are you angry? Why should we not criticize the ANC? Their administration is hardly efficient. So why all the nit picking about public holidays I am sure the abolishing of Christmas and Good Friday won't improve productivity in the country but it might cost them more votes than they can afford. They have introduced so many extra public holidays that they appear quite as foolish as we think them to be. The bulk of the country is Christian and other religions observe their holidays and so will we and when +- 80% of the population stay away from work it will make their mass actions seem silly by comparison. So why not just leave things as they are.

@ Sam, what u mean by bias ? I will tell you. Most ppl in SA did not want the abortion act to go through, but it did. Most SA wants the death penalty to come back, but it won't. Most SA are on paper " CHRISTIANS" in SA. So what does bias means ? It means that christian will be persecuted wherever they are. This is what bias means. No other religion, because of it's beliefs has gone through what the christian faith has gone through. We will endure and fight....Not for self, but for what we believe a majority....You want me to pray 5 times just not to be bias ? You want me to call up dead people, just for the sake of not being bias? ? No No. We will unseat this government, if that is what it is asking for......

Keneth Moshoe is attracting unnecessary attention, removing the holiday isn't banning the christian religion,he can celebrate the day as much as he likes, considering SA as diverse society we don't need this holiday its nt fair with other faiths

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-11-11 02:33

sam, what you don't understand is this is a Christian country, therefore Christian people have the democratic right to decide which holidays are official. 80% of the population describe themselves as Christian, christians want Easter and Christmas as official holidays, if you don't like it, then persuade the majority of the population to change religion or drop it totally, in the meantime, accept the majority.

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-11-11 13:17

Rodney what you don't understand is that this country is a constitutional democracy and using your logic makes khethu's point valid, you can't have your cake and eat it!

      maria.roth.589 - 2012-11-11 22:57

What is not fair to other faiths? They are allowed to have their holidays and they take them. However when +_80% of the population stays away from works on those days who will run the country? Diverse or not we are not so diverse that we have sufficient people to man all stations. Practicality demands that the holidays should remain. So stop paying lip service to the fools and think.

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-11-10 23:09

It serves no practical purpose to abolish our traditional holidays. One can only ascribe the motive for even contemplating it as spitefulness. But now we come to the blatant hypocrisy of Reverend Kenneth Meshoe and those he represents. According to reports the protest would also have been against the legalising of dagga. They expect others not to interfere with their beliefs and traditions but in the same breath they try to impose their sentiments and beliefs on others. C'mon! Grant others their habits and customs too!

  • hannelize.lombard - 2012-11-10 23:13

Removing Christmas and Easter is not going to stop me from celebrating it. Personally I would welcome the idea. Then we can go back to what the days are really about instead of the money-making farce it has become.

Why can't we think out of the box for a while?? We have holidays that are less important on the calendar, Days like heritage day and day of reconciliation. Why can't we say people of other religions come forth and state their important days worth celebrations like Christmas and Good friday only two days allowed, then they be put on the calendar and substitute the above mentioned less important holidays than take out Christmas and Good friday. Then by that there will be balance. We don't have to fight for silly things but had to look at alternatives to accommodate one another. With this spirit we can go forward.

@ zwelewethu , December 25 th was Saturnalia a celebration of the sun god tammuz, therefore not a christian celebration. Jesus was a JEW they never celebrated birthdays . The Roman emperor Constantine a pagan , unbanned the Christians and put himself at the head of the christian church . He or his followers then told all the Romans that they had in actual fact been celebrating Jesus birthday and made up all the other false stuff that the churches believe in . The Roman Empire was then trough that changed from pagan to christian within 28 years.

It is against the law to with hold religious hollidays. Companies have to allow Muslims to attend religious festivities, thus the country would have to allow the same for all religions. They are testing the water to try and shift South Africa from a Christian country. Be very careful of what you let slide concerning this from hear on out.

Why are retards allowed in government? Only in South africa are idiots allowed to have any say on how the country is run. So bluddy what if other eligions do not celebrate christmas, they still have a day or 2 off from work. What they complaining about? Thw WORLD celebrates it! My dog runs the yard better than the government runs this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do Islams take off Christmas and Easter holidays? Christians do not take time off for Eid or Ramadan. Kathy

  • tshepisot - 2012-11-11 03:28

Its about time, scrap it from the Calender.

      durell.dunn - 2012-11-12 08:05

How about freedom day is scrapped from the calender. How would all " Freedom and Revolutionary fighters feel " The fact of the matter is that these holidays have significant values...

  • Shane Prins - 2012-11-11 03:47

are these protesting xtians dumb or what? who said anything about banning xmas? the only thing under discussion is whether or not these days should be national holidays. if you want to celebrate xmas and easter, no matter how stupid the reasoning behind celebrating these pagan inspired days, take a day off work like other stupid religions do.

  • boitumelo.matshediso.98 - 2012-11-11 03:55

I dont't believe that they are even debating this issue. This is a christian country so hands off this holidays.whoever does'nt like it must pack his/her staff and go back to where he/she belongs.I think now we a becoming to accomodating. We allow them freedom to excercise their own religion in our country, now they question why only our holiday is recognised?.Its time they realise that a visitor can't enjoy the same rights as the back off julle.

      Shane Prins - 2012-11-11 04:01

who are 'they'? most people from other religions were born in this country, just bcos you believe in this xtian nonsense doesn't give you the right to tell sa citizens to leave the country. you dont decide what gets debated, this is a constitutional democracy, we debate what we like. if you dont like it, maybe YOU should leave the country. and BTW, only the issue of having these days as public holidays are being debated, no one said anything about banning the celebration of these formerly pagan holy days.

  • tolene - 2012-11-11 04:01

Perhaps they should be made aware that these holidays are not from apartheid government but a world wide thing. SA has more public holidays than should be legal, so why not get rid of some of those before trying to change ancient traditional holidays. Honestly this government is a joke.

  • EricksonTL - 2012-11-11 04:39

Take away Youth Day Ms. Pandor. The things the youth protested for - a decent education, and a chance for a future, have been destroyed by your corrupt party anyway. Aside from which, you utter twit, do you realise that many retailers depend on the festive season sales to keep afloat the rest of the year? Is the ANC BENT on destroying the South African economy, or are they just too dumb to find their own behinds with both hands and a map?

  • rowlandkc - 2012-11-11 04:47

So when debating the public holidays in the early 90's, one mp put forward that a portion of the public holidays should be fixed and the others flexible - so say 6 days that we all must take and 6 days that we choose to take when it suits us - its really not the worst idea!

      EricksonTL - 2012-11-11 06:15

Logic does not live here. Why bother?

  • sibusiso.s.ndaba - 2012-11-11 04:54

Uyagula lo gogo, she fails in every department she's in fire from the govt.

      Clive Silaule - 2012-11-11 05:56

i think Minister Naledi Panando is operating in the Darkness she needs a deliverance a strong one how can she choose only the Holly days? what abt youth day

  • michael.jackwood - 2012-11-11 04:55

Hand bag, i cant agree with you more, i dont see why we need to celebrate youth day anymore! But there should be no worry, if ANC can mess around with Christmas day holiday, that is the day they will be asking voters to choose another government, they cant, and more over, christmas holiday create lots of business opportunities and it is good for the economy of this country!.

  • SteveSingers1967 - 2012-11-11 05:01

Haha...You got to love the SA government, the only one in the world that's unable to improve or learn from its mistakes...haha, sad but ironically funny.

  • moses.govender.7 - 2012-11-11 05:03

Lol this is the easiest way for the ANC to lose votes. I cant believe any comrades will ever back this idea. Come to think of it a whole lot of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Chinese business men will all go backrupt if the two biggest shopping holidays are why would they be against it? It just seems that Pandor misses the limelight since she was moved from education and wants some relax SA these holidays are not going anywhere!!!

      mike.down.5492 - 2012-11-11 13:41

but they are not removing christmas as a holiday only a public holiday. Who shops on christmas day and on good friday? this will have zero effect on christmas shopping.
