Johannesburg - A toddler who drowned in the Hartbeespoort Dam after a boat capsized at the weekend has been identified by police as Zandre Vosloo.

The body of the 23-month-old boy was found by police divers who scoured a search quadrant after the boating accident on Mother’s Day.

News24 had reported that the Vosloo family, of Pretoria North, had been staying at a local caravan park and had been on the dam aboard a friend’s boat.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that the boat had been towing an inflatable tube at the time of the accident.

"The father and a friend were on the tube at the time and during the boat making a tight turn on the water it appears that the tube dug into the water and this may have led to the boat capsizing.

"The boat had on board the skipper, the mother, and three children."

All the occupants of the boat landed in the water when it capsized.

"The little boy... did not surface after disappearing underwater."

It is believed that no one on the boat had been wearing life jackets at the time.

Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that the investigation into the child’s death were ongoing.

“The detectives are dealing with the matter and for now we can release the name of the child only. The boy’s parents were very unhappy about the media presence at the scene and we will not be divulging their identities, lest we be blamed if the media harass them,” he said.
