Johannesburg - A spokesperson for the Hawks, Captain Paul Ramaloka, said on Sunday that three men had been arrested in connection with the death of ANC North West official Obuti Chika.

Ramaloka said: "I can confirm that three men will appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday for conspiracy to commit murder."

Meanwhile the African National Congress Youth League said on Sunday its North West chairperson Papiki Baboile had been arrested.

"The ANCYL has noted the charging of the ANCYL North West chairperson, comrade Papiki Baboile, with the alleged murder of comrade Obuti Chika," Khusela Sangoni-Khawe said in a statement.

"The ANC Youth League believes in the rule of law and has confidence in the criminal justice system and thus call upon all our members to co-operate with the law enforcement agencies in this matter."

She added that Baboile remained innocent until proven guilty and said that they trust that the matter will be "speedily brought to conclusion".

Ramaloko did not want to name the names of the men arrested.

"Their names will be released once they appear in court," he said.

Chika was shot dead outside his house in Klerksdorp on 14 December.

No one else was injured in the shooting, police said at the time.

At the time, North West premier Thandi Modise identified the victim as Chika, the party's regional secretary.

Modise said a number of officials in the province had been the target of violent crime in the past few weeks preceding Chika's killing.

More ANC members have been killed by their own since Liberation than all the years of Apartheid.

      piet.boerie - 2013-02-18 04:39

Yep believe it or not. There is still a war and its the ANC at war with itself. Can you belive they kill their own members for tenders and acess to government resource and pretend they care for the poor. Yep a party that is suppised for the poor murders their own and we have not even started on the billion lost in corruption. No comrades this is not the same people that bought us Liberation.
