Cape Town - A lawyer who represented suspects in one of the biggest perlemoen [abalone] poaching syndicates in the Western Cape has been arrested on similar charges, it was reported on Friday.

The Daily Voice reported that Anthony Broadway was arrested in Bellville on Tuesday on charges relating to racketeering, money-laundering, fraud and the Financial Intelligence Centre Act.

He made a brief court appearance and was granted bail of R250 000.

Broadway was expected to share the dock in the Western Cape High Court later on Friday with alleged poaching kingpin Frank Barends and 25 others, for pre-trial proceedings.

Barends and his co-accused face 534 charges, including illegal possession of perlemoen, racketeering and corruption.

Chinese national Ran Wei, who allegedly funded and ran the syndicate, is still missing.
