Hawks shoot dead Kruger poacher

2012-11-11 18:02

Johannesburg - The Hawks on Sunday shot dead an alleged rhino poacher and injured another during a shootout in the Kruger National Park.

Captain Paul Ramoloka said the Hawks, in partnership with the special anti-poaching task force, received information about the alleged poachers who were spotted near the Sabi Sands private game reserve in Skukuza at around 14:00.

"When our team confronted the four men, they opened fire on the police who returned fire. One of the poachers was killed, another is in hospital while the other two were arrested," he said.

Police confiscated a hunting rifle, axe, saw and sedan used by the alleged poachers.

Ramoloka said the three men would be charged with attempted murder and being in possession of dangerous weapons.

"We are still trying to link the suspects with some of the rhino poaching which have taken place in the KNP over the past week."

According to SA National Parks (SANParks) the country had lost 528 rhinos since the beginning of 2012 and 320 of them were killed in the KNP.

they should of shot them all dead, these poachers are excuses for human beings

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-11 18:20

See the nation united in joy. We have no time or sympathy for Rhino killers. Lock them up for 40 years.

      mlucejko - 2012-11-11 18:51

"Well done" HAWKS !! Kill them all !!

      ernest.lwandle - 2012-11-11 19:00

nation united in joy indeed and ilike that ,you know what i wish that one day we can join our hands together as a nation regardless of skin colour/political afiliations etc to fight against each and every evilnes. we need to proud of our beautifull country and forget about the past

      loftycrane - 2012-11-11 19:07

Keeping some alive will enable the SAPS to obtain further information which could lead to more arrests.

      fussed.anderson - 2012-11-12 07:17

Why did they have to shoot a dead poacher?????

      gungets.tuft - 2012-11-12 07:23

Lofty - exactly. They are the foot soldiers, we need to find the big boys behind them. The syndicates include vets, game ranchers, diplomats, politicians, nature conservation execs, cops. Treat this as organised crime, investigate and find the bosses.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-11-12 10:25

Actually Gareth my personal preference would be to shoot them in the stomach and then mutilate them before they bleed slowly to death in agony or are torn to pieces by predators like the vultures just as they do to the rhino.

  • debduplessis - 2012-11-11 18:09

  • mlungisi.botha - 2012-11-11 18:13

YYYYeSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I hope the attempted murder charge is bolstered by a conspiracy to murder charge. Conspiracy to murder? Yes ...conspiracy to murder rhinos! I think that if they'd shot all of them the message to those waiting in the wings would have been stronger.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-11-11 19:43

*sigh* AT LAST ......they should just shoot to kill, dont ask any questions.

  • Bob.Cee123 - 2012-11-11 18:16

I don't take pleasure in hearing of people dying but this is one of those exceptions.

  • badladballie - 2012-11-11 18:19

Awesome! That's how you do it.

  • SharonE - 2012-11-11 18:20

  • Johnny - 2012-11-11 18:24

Excellent job done by Hawks. Now these useless killers can worry about the years and years they will sit behind bars like that Thai who got 40 years. lekker man, lekker .

      nukki.green - 2012-11-11 21:22

and please DONT give them bail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-11-12 10:30

I actually object to having to feed this Thai scum in our jail for the next 40 years because it gives his cronies a reason to visit him and shoot more rhinos! Dehorn them and cut out their tongues and send them back to Thailand to rot.

  • Erna - 2012-11-11 18:24

Good - now for a couple more. Rather let poachers go extinct than and keep the rhino going.

  • jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-11-11 18:45

This is really great news to finish off my really crap weekend at work,,well done Hawks. give them all a Bells.

  • Thabiso Davis Davis - 2012-11-11 18:45

please give them 80 yrs each. enough now.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-11-12 10:35

No - rather mutilate them badly and send them back where they came from for their own government to look after or not. I'd rather the money used to feed these scumbag greedy things be spent to feed OUR hungry and destitute people in rural areas and townships. They don't hesitate to kill drugmules from SA - it's cheaper.

  • john.reed.92505956 - 2012-11-11 18:47

Let them know how the rhinos feel, pull their finger nails and toe nails out!!!

      duggancraig - 2012-11-12 13:14

Same thought occurred to me ... Shooting dead poachers isn't going to help anyone anyway. We need to be shooting the living ones :-)

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-11-13 12:05

It reminds me of a movie clip: "If you kill me I will kill you right back".

  • john.lundt.9 - 2012-11-11 19:49

Awesome guys.....well done. U have my support.
