Durban - A plot to assassinate a Durban businessman to claim a R34m life policy was foiled in a dramatic police sting on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said in a statement that officers had received a tip-off about the alleged plot.

He said a businessman had hired a man to assist him in finding a hit man to kill his business partner.

"The Hawks received the information and involved Crime Intelligence. An undercover cop approached the man and presented himself as the man for the job, and a deal was concluded," he said.

The businessman had equipped the undercover cop with a car, a police blue light and a police radio.

Mulaudzi said investigators staged a murder scene and within half an hour of the fake killing, the "hit man" had been paid R10 000 for the "job".

He said the alleged middleman was then arrested and led the Hawks to the house of his boss, the businessman, who was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol.

"The two will appear before the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday, facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, possession of unlicensed firearm as well as possession of police equipment," he said.
