Hawks unaware of lawyer skipping bail

Johannesburg - The Hawks were unaware of reports that lawyer George Michaelides had skipped the country while out on bail, a spokesperson said on Friday.

"As far as I know there has been no complaint laid," said Colonel McIntosh Polela.

He was responding to a report in The New Age on Friday that Michaelides had disappeared after claiming he was flying to Durban to meet a client last Wednesday.

Tens of millions of rands from his attorney's practice in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, had allegedly gone missing too.

Michaelides told friends he had been receiving death threats, the daily said.

It was also reported that Michaelides had links with George Louca, wanted in connection with the killing of Teazer's strip club owner Lolly Jackson.

Michaelides was on bail after being charged with the shooting death of Kevin Trytsman in his Bedfordview office in December 2009 after a heated argument. Michaelides said he had acted in self-defence.

Leave the Hawks, they have more pressing matters to attend to.. Putting Malema behind bars, they can chase the silly lawyers later.

I say, if the guy's out on bail & is NOT allowed to leave the country, his name, ID & photo should be on all airport system to alert them if he tries to flee the country.

Mmmm. You've obviously never needed the skills of an attorney in dealing with an opponent in court. If you have, I guess you were the defendant or the accused. Either way, with an ill-considered opinion like this, you were most likely the loser. On the other hand, if your attorney had won the case or trial, I'm sure you wouldn't see them as such. Sure, law is a dirty game, driven by the need for justice, criminal intent, greed, stupidity etc and/or simple misfortune of the attorneys client. The very essence of an attorney's work is finding a remedy for this. Would you employ a electrician to remove your tonsils ? Not likely. But when you need an attorney at your side, he or she is your best weapon and defense. Trust me, 50% of the people who have had dealings with an attorney think they're great. The others ? Well, they just lost the case. Go figure. Please understand however, that I am not defending or supporting the actions of this individual, who happens to be an attorney. If he's guilty of stealing trust funds, I'm sure one or two of his 'special clients' will find him and set the record straight.
