Johannesburg - A traditional healer was arrested in Amalinda, East London, on Wednesday for defrauding a former teacher of more than R1m, the Hawks said.

"The bogus Ugandan traditional healer defrauded the teacher for more than R1m of her pension money...," said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

The healer also promised that her "ancestors" would increase her money to R8m and said her "ancestors" wanted her to quit her job, which she did.

"The teacher was made to resign from her employment in 2012... the money was taken by the traditional healer on different occasions," said Ramaloko.

He said three other "bogus" doctors were also arrested and would appear with the traditional healer on fraud charges in the East London Magistrate's Court on Friday.
