Healers summon ancestors for Mandela

2013-07-24 15:32

Pretoria - A group of Gauteng traditional healers performed a ritual for former president Nelson Mandela on Wednesday, outside the Pretoria hospital where he has been treated for 47 days.

The healers burnt incense in a pot, knelt on the ground, sprinkled tobacco, sang and summoned the Madiba ancestors to heal Mandela.

Khubane Mashele, the chairperson of the traditional healers' interim council in Gauteng, asked the spirits of those who had passed during the struggle to help heal the anti-apartheid icon.

"We summon the great kings and soldiers of the struggle to help us in calling the ancestors of Mandela, and help him heal because we still need him," Mashele said in xiTsonga during the ritual.

Earlier in the day, a group of traditional leaders from the North West arrived at the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital to deliver messages of support and a bucket of flowers.

Kgosi Madoda Zibi, chairperson of the house of North West traditional leaders, said they hoped to convey a message to the Mandela family.

"We have been mandated by the North West traditional leaders to come and express our well-wishes," Zibi said.

"We just want to thank him for his contribution to the liberation of his country."

Zibi and his delegation were told to place the flowers and a card at the wall outside the facility's Celliers Street entrance, where messages of support had been left since Mandela was hospitalised on 8 June with a recurring lung infection.

      MastersVoice - 2013-07-24 17:55

I'm guessing they heard Mandela will pull through, so they decided to perform this "ritual". That way they can claim the ancestors saved him! How many gullible South Africans will believe these charlatans?

      Mattewis Kat - 2013-07-25 08:36

@MastersVoice Don't be so sure! The ancestors may still decide to do the pulling, and what will these ritualists say then? How many gullible South Africans you ask: Just about as many as the amount voting ANC I should think!

God helps them who help themselves ( this does not mean taxpayers moneys)

      fargone - 2013-07-24 17:15

@mpho, much depends on what you believe, prayers to the God of the Bible can and do change things, HOWEVER, Mandela is in his 90's, his quality of life asuming he is still alive is not good. What I would like to know is what good will summoning the alleged ancestors do? He has had a full life, everyone will die at some point, why must their be a circus outside the hospital. Who says he even wants to keep living!

Point taken Fargone. Perhaps we should just let the old man rest in peace.

Christianity is steeped in ritual. Al religions are.

      lacrimosewolf - 2013-07-24 19:18

As if being christened, married in church, buried in hallowed ground, celebrating Easter and Christmas (just to name a few) aren't rituals. Interesting to see so many still so frightened of a word.

Why do people still need Mandela around? He cannot live forever. The last time he made a speech or appeared in public was years ago. Let the old man rest in peace, he has done his job.

  • MastersVoice - 2013-07-24 16:09

Absolute nonsense! As longs as these outdated rituals and religions determine people's perspectives on life, we cannot progress as a "rainbow nation".

  • Philip Buys - 2013-07-24 19:52

@atheitis... You are really trying hard to get your message across. Deep inside there seem to be a longing to belong. I pity you, and pray that you may see the Light, and expierence that wonderful peace.

  • Beeg Balaboy - 2013-07-24 20:01

how can u possibly believe in such a ludicrous thing as ancestors. we christians believe when jesus returns (yes we know he died 2000 years ago) he will lift us all up (fatties included-gravity will be suspended to make it easier) to meet him in the clouds. christians, dead for thousands of years, will miraculously be put together, unlike humpty dumpty, and will also meet jesus on cloud nine. now, surely this is more plausable than thinking our ancestors will heal us!
