Johannesburg - Department of Health officials spent more than R350 000 on appliances for a bureau in Braamfontein when the devices should have cost a fraction of that, the Sowetan reported on Tuesday.

An invoice by Natumi Trading enterprises reportedly quoted R23 997 for three microwaves and R120 195 for five fridges.

Five high definition televisions from another service provider cost R65 000.

According to the Sowetan, the officials placed the blame on chief director Shireen Pardesi, who told the publication she was not allowed to comment and referred questions to health department spokesperson Joe Maila.

Maila said the matter would be investigated.

Ntombikayise Natumi, whose company was contracted to purchase the items, reportedly said she did nothing wrong, and that officials had the choice of declining her quotation.

Meanwhile, it was reported in July that Ndoda Biyela, who was suspended as chief financial officer of the Gauteng health department in August last year, and was later asked to leave the KwaZulu-Natal health department, is taking both his former employers and the national health department to court. He was suspended following "allegations of irregularities relating to procurement processes in the department", apparently relating to a linen contract awarded in May 2013.

The Gauteng health department has paid up to R544m in damages and settlements, News24 reported earlier this month.

The sum, which relates to medical negligence cases, is for the period between January 2010 to the end of the 2014/15 financial year, according to MEC Qedani Mahlangu.
