ALTHOUGH yesterday’s Health meeting did not offer any further information into the situation at Northdale Hospital, officials did shed some light into the state of the province’s health system.

Yesterday’s Special Health Portfolio Committee meeting held by Department of Health (DOH) MEC Dr Sbongiseni Dhlomo did touch on the investigation at Northdale Hospital — where CEO Felicity du Preez and HR manager Sibongile Ndlovu were both transferred pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged mismanagement at the facility.

According to the report, more than half of all healthcare facilities in the province do not have access to the Internet. Although the department met its original target of 25%, the proportion of health facilities connected to the Internet still remains at 39,9%.

•Emergency Medical Services

Available staff and ambulance resources were said to be insufficient to operate the province’s 300 ambulances. Also, a shortage of service providers for fleet maintenance was said to pose a major problem. The department’s statistics showed that emergency services responded to only five percent of urban call-outs in under 15 minutes and 40% of rural call-outs in under 40 minutes.

•Patient satisfaction rate

According to the DOH, 75% of patients at district hospitals were satisfied with the service and treatment at the facility, 80% in regional hospitals and 81% in specialised facilities.
