Bloemfontein - A gang of heavily armed robbers hit a busy mall in Bloemfontein, shot and wounded a police constable and hijacked a woman and her daughter during their escape on Friday evening.

Free State police are hoping that video footage will lead to their arrests after the robbery at the Twin City Mall.

“The fact that all of the men wore balaclavas and blue overalls makes it even more complicated, but we will study the mall’s video material today and hope that it could shed more light on the robbery,” said Captain Harry Nagel, provincial police spokesperson.

Between six and 11 men took an undisclosed amount of money from a chain store, and expensive alcohol from a liquor outlet, causing chaos as patrons ran for cover.

A police vehicle responded and a shoot-out ensued with the robbers who were armed with pistols and rifles.

A constable from the police in Heidedal was shot and injured in the hand. He underwent surgery on Saturday and is expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday, said Nagel.

The robbers also hijacked a Toyota RunX with a woman and her daughter inside.

They later dropped the child off at the entrance of the mall where she was found by the police.

The woman was dropped off at Pelonomi Hospital with injuries. The hijacked vehicle was later found abandoned in Batho while the Nissan 1400 bakkie was found in East End.
