Johannesburg - The N3 highway between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng was experiencing high traffic volumes on Monday following the end of the long weekend.

"They have been high during the course of the day starting at around 10:00 this morning, and it has slowed down now, but it has been very heavy during the course of the day," N3 Toll Concession spokesperson Andy Visser told News24.

According to the N3 Toll Concession Twitter page most of the traffic was heading north towards Gauteng.

Between 20:00 and 21:00 on Monday evening 2 020 vehicles per hour (v/h) were passing through the De Hoek Plaza toll gate near Heidelberg travelling towards Johannesburg and 1 590 through the Wilge Plaza toll gate.

A total of 460 v/h were travelling north through the Mooi Plaza toll gate and 560 through the Tugela Plaza.

Between 19:00 and 20:00, 2 080 v/h were passing through the De Hoek Plaza, 2 120 through the Wilge Plaza, 620 through Mooi Plaza and 770 through the Tugela Plaza.
