Heidelberg protesters re-group

2012-03-20 10:07

Johannesburg - Hundreds of residents of Ratanda in Heidelberg gathered on the streets on Tuesday to protest over service delivery, Gauteng police said.

"People are marching down the street. There's no violence at this stage," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The march followed the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals overnight. The ransacking and stealing from the traders was sparked by service delivery protests which started on Monday.

Two houses owned by ward councillors and a municipal office were also torched.

Dlamini said 48 people had so far been arrested for public violence and were expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Typical - burn and break down when you are unhappy with something

      RSole - 2012-03-20 11:20

Some call it looting they call it "creative shopping"

  • Peter - 2012-03-20 10:20

Protest over service delivery??? Silly excuse now just to go on the rampage and behave like the uneducated idiots they are. So why loot shops?? Covering up xenephobia. Now they have stolen everthing, where are they going to shop next?, as those stores looted will not have insurance for them to recover. The owners are now broke and will go and steal.

Last year during the Municipal elections they had a chance to vote the ANC out but they chose not to. The mind boggles.

      Sharon - 2012-03-20 11:08

You will probably find that the majority of these protesters didn't even vote!

  • Ian - 2012-03-20 10:28

I don't understand, how do you protest over something that doesn't exist?????????

  • Herman - 2012-03-20 10:38

How can SA ever progress back to what it was with this useless majority?

      Tammy - 2012-03-20 11:02

it will be a long road to freedom for us Herman

      Michael - 2012-03-20 11:13

Inequality causes this, extreme rich and extreme poor.

      lovenergy - 2012-03-20 12:24

@Herman, hopefully one day we could stop looking at the past with eyes full of hope and direct our eyes at the future instead. We have a chance to build something up together, something better than ever before but we need willing people who can see the importance of this future for ALL South Africans. South Africa's past wasn't perfect, it's present isn't perfect so our last chance lies in the future.

      Shanelle - 2012-03-20 14:09

      Well said Lovenergy!!

  • chiepner - 2012-03-20 10:45

But next elections VOTE them into office because they will resolve all your problems afterwards..........protesting will help you nothing now because the arrogant fat cats has retained their daily dose of thievery and tender trepeneurship - the only thing that will bring about real change is to use your vote to remove the thieves from office and replace them with someone else.

  • HiJack - 2012-03-20 10:50

I rest my case. ALL other races start businesses and try do something with themselves. Along come the barbarians and just steal and destroy.

  • SARealist - 2012-03-20 11:06

Why burn and destroy? Are they too stupid to understand that they got what they voted for. If they want something different then they should change their vote.

      Tammy - 2012-03-20 11:19

you are asking the impossible - LOL

  • Benny - 2012-03-20 11:26

The ANC is certainly in a self destruct mode and if they don't wake up very quickly they will be joining the jobless povo. What a mess.

  • Gavin - 2012-03-20 12:42

Paul and Nicholas, you are both idiots HAHAHAHAHA

  • Modiehi - 2012-03-20 17:42

I wish to knw whn will our so called leaders ARE rite nw,what are they doing?

  • Jean - 2012-03-21 19:42

The re-group was anything but peaceful, they burnt down a private business bordering Rantanda, and now heard they want to march into Heidelberg tomorrow, as they have burnt down everything of importance in Ratanda. They protest against the same people they themselves put there, Friggin idiots. And the police are a lot of cowards, they just stood watching.

  • Cassandra Olivier - 2012-03-21 20:05

They in the same boat every year and they still vote ANC
