Cape Town - A helicopter pilot was forced to make a crash landing on the N12 in Benoni on Monday night after experiencing mechanical failure, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said the helicopter allegedly experienced mechanical failure and the pilot was then forced to land on the nearest spot on the N12 just before the Snake Road off ramp.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found the crashed helicopter on one side of the road.

"The helicopter allegedly auto rotated and crash landed in the road. Fortunately no motor vehicles or pedestrians were hit and the pilot only sustained minor injuries," Rossouw said.

Local authorities were on scene to investigate the incident as the cause is still unknown, he said.
