Cape Town - A Western Cape man has been convicted of defrauding the Overstrand Municipality of R3m by submitting false quotations to secure tenders, it was reported on Wednesday.

Hermanus Mostert was convicted of 285 counts of fraud by the Hermanus Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, The Cape Argus reported.

According to the newspaper, Mostert, who owned HM Irrigation, was responsible for looking after the equipment and machinery at the Hermanus Sewerage Plant and Preekstoel Water Purification Works between 2004 and 2009.

He would submit false quotations in the names of his friends and acquaintances, to create fake competition with "higher" prices than his own, genuine quotations, which he always ensured were the lowest.

Sentencing proceedings would start on 28 May.
