Cape Town - A safari tour truck that crossed over the Zimbabwean border into South Africa was found with cartons of illegal cigarettes with an estimated street value of R1 million, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

The truck was believed to have entered the country on Tuesday and made its way to a warehouse in the Brackenfell industrial area of Cape Town, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut.

Members of the K9 unit entered a warehouse in Silver Park, Okavango, on Wednesday evening, and found the truck and two men.

“Upon searching the truck they found a false compartment between the floor and luggage storage area, stretching the entire length of the vehicle, filled with cartons,” he said.

“A toilet in the warehouse also contained numerous boxes filled with cartons of illegal cigarettes.”

A total of 4 600 cartons were found.

The men will appear in court soon.
