Ex-champ Freitag gets bail on drug charge

Johannesburg - Former world high jump champion Jacques Freitag has been released on bail following his arrest for alleged drug possession, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Freitag's lawyer, Fanie Le Roux, said his client was released on bail of R500 on Monday, after spending three days in jail for the possession of Cat (methcathinone).

After he allegedly went through a red traffic light in Bronkhorstspruit on Friday, officers stopped and searched him and found the drug in the pocket of his pants.

Freitag, 30, spent three days in a cell with 40 men, one open toilet and a blanket that had not been washed in years, Le Roux said.

"The world is watching Jacques, there are countless numbers of people out there to whom he can mean something... through this incident we intend to show the world that he's not a bad guy. He's a person who made a mistake."

Le Roux said his client was not a habitual drug user, and that he had been caught with only a very small amount of Cat.

Magistrate Mzwakhe Skosana ordered Freitag to report to the Bronkhorstspruit police station three times a week, and postponed the case for further investigation.

"not a habitual drug user" - Why do these people feel the need to use drugs? They know very well that it is poison and you don't need them to have a good time. A stupid move... Too bad so many people fall into the trap of thinking that doing drugs just for kicks once in a while is not a problem. Do they not realise that this is how drug addictions start? Eish....

It does'nt matter what kind of drug user he is he is still a drug user and do u as his lawyer think that bc he was a high jump champion he should have gotten a 5 star prison cel 4 his own use.Wake up brother this is SA and those previllages are only meant 4 politicians

  • retha.reinders - 2012-11-13 10:33

...what a lonely life and boring life you must have to use 'drugs'...

  • kitty.vanjaarsveld - 2012-11-13 10:40

Shame poor Jacques. If you use only a little bit, it does not count as a user. What type of message are your sending out to the youngsters.

"in a cell with 40 men, one open toilet and a blanket that had not been washed in years" He should have been arrested and placed in a 5-star hotel I suppose.

Is his small drug using problem the reason for not hearing his name anymore?

  • deon.evert - 2012-11-13 10:46

Unfortunately, his appearance suggests that he is indeed a habitual drug user.

Not a habitual drug user. That's what they all say. This happens to be the first time he has been caught. What about all the other times he has got away with it. Do me a Favour!!!!!

What kind of a loser uses Cat anyway, if he was caught with a few kilo's of heroin or coke then sure he would have a bit of street credibility but a small amount of Cat? Might as well have been a bankie or a straw of Tik. What a poser , he is just trying to jump onto and ride Lance Armstrong's tail coats because Lance being a trendsetter has made being a drug addicted sportsman cool again, Lance is like the Deigo Maradona of the 21st century, yes he is a cheat, yes he lies, yes he has a crippling addiction but he is still cool. This high jump guy though ( I will not waste brain space by learning his name ) is just a wannabe who is trying to get another 15 minutes of fame at the end of a very uneventful career.

He is lucky that he was caught in South Africa with drugs - imagine if he was caught with drugs at the Beijing Olympics. lol
