High-profile backing for snubbed advocate

2012-11-10 22:12

Johannesburg -  Advocate Jeremy Gauntlett is set to be nominated as a judge in the Constitutional Court, the Sunday Times reported.

"Yes, [struggle stalwart] Dr Mamphela Ramphele and [veteran lawyer] Sir Sydney Kentridge and others are to nominate me," said Gauntlett.

Ramphele confirmed that she would nominate him.

"He has the qualifications, the skills and the experience as one of South Africa's most talented legal brains," she was quoted as saying.

"...We should be celebrating the talents of someone like him rather than pulling him down as too tall a poppy."

Earlier this month, Gauntlett was snubbed by the Judicial Service Commission for a position on the bench for, among other things, not having the requisite "humility".

I hope the Judicial Services Commission are squirming. But then again, they had their instructions from the Chief Crook.

Gauntlett is one of the best, but he's white and that bloody crook of a Hlope will do anything to keep him away, Sorry Hlope and his ANC buddies.

stop with making unsubstantiated comments. Instead of looking at issues at a more deeper level to try to understand it. U resort to this. Shame

I am amazzzzzed!! Not only do white men with excelent qualifications have to fight AA, EE we now have to conform to a "humble" wad of nothing?? Is this the only way that so-called blacks can achieve success??

In 2009 he left his wife in favour of a man. Certainly un-Muslim, certainly un-Christian and absolutely un-b-f-ly un-African.

      bernard.mackenzie.5 - 2012-11-11 04:55

So he is true to himself, understands his place in the world and Will operate from a secular and impartial standpoint. Sounds like the right man for the job.

      beverly.young3 - 2012-11-11 06:26

YAY!!! again, made my day :) What he does in his private life is nothing to do with us....@ bernard....well said....hee hee...just a thought. Skip to a few months down the line, and ha ha maybe, he is on the bench when the Zuma 'tapes' surface again.....errr and Hlope saga? Ho ho ho......just saying, just dreaming..... look I am not implying anything, except a fresh, unbaised approach to the law. *sigh* I can dream cant I ?

Just read Civil Unions Act, 2006, a law passed during Mr Thabo Mbeki's regime. It will expressly inform you that he had a right to marry whomever regardless of the person's gender or sex. Judge Satchwell is also a lesbian. She is a the Constitutional Court, so is Judge Edwin Cameron. Being gay or lesbian does not disqualify an otherwise qualified person. Advocate Jeremy Gauntlet is the best legal mind par excellent. I know for a fact. As a law student myself I have been following the cases he was involved in. As for a marriage who said marriage is perfect.

You made my day Holden. It seems all the geniuses in the world are gay. Yay!

  • siphom.mnguni - 2012-11-11 08:03

\Earlier this month JSC overlooked him for among other things, that he lack the requisite \humility\, so goes the last part of the News24 column. What is that?

      hein.huyser - 2012-11-11 16:00

That is the reality of qualified whites trying to do their bit for SA, but often run into a mentality that belongs to dinosaurs

      siphom.mnguni - 2012-11-11 16:34

@hein.huyser:)thanks for your comment. At least now something is falling into place. For anyone who has an interest in law, people of Adv. Jeremy Gauntlet's calibre are called the Rolls Royce of the legal fraternity.
