Johannesburg - A man has died after he and six others were caught fleeing from police following an alleged hijacking, according to Gauteng police.

They said the truck, carrying tobacco, was hijacked along the N4 highway in Silverton, Pretoria.

"There were seven men involved in a robbery around 13:30 in Silverton," said police spokesperson, Major Mack Mngomezulu.

"Police responded and upon their arrival, they found these suspects loading cigarette boxes into their vehicles.

"Six fled on foot and one fled in a white BMW. Police chased the ones that fled on foot.

"After they were captured, one of them started to vomit and died on the scene next to the freeway."

Mngomezulu said the cause of the man's death was not known.

Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said paramedics were called to the scene.

She said the cause of his death would only be known after a post-mortem.

"But he definitely did not die from a gunshot," she said.

Five others were arrested and were expected to appear in a local court on charges of robbery and hijacking.

No firearms were found in their possession.
