Johannesburg - A hijacker hit and killed a street cleaner when he lost control of a stolen car during a high-speed chase in Bedfordview, East Rand, on Wednesday, said Ekurhuleni metro police.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the 21-year-old man stole a silver Honda on Wednesday morning.

"Metro police officers, who were busy with law enforcement on the side of the road, saw the vehicle approaching at a high speed at about 09:00. They attempted to stop the driver," he said. A high speed chase ensued.

Mokheseng said the hijacker lost control of the vehicle and it hit a 33-year-old old street cleaner employed by the local municipality. She died at the scene.

The man was arrested and would soon appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court, said Mokheseng. Bedfordview police were investigating.

I hope he is charged with murder. Not Manslaughter, murder. He killed someone while committing a crime.

A high five for the Metro Police's awareness. He should not only be charged for car theft but for dumping as well

Outrageous – yet another sad death to add to the tens of thousands of people that have already been killed by crime in South Africa. All south African’s should unity together to fight crime by staring local, regional and national networks of public crime intelligence units – feeding any information to both the police and security companies in the affected area. Then forcing the police to act – it’s our constitutional right to be protected. Every death is sad and devastates families and friends. I completely agree that if court they should be charged with murder – god, please keep our people safe.

Well said sacitizen. We as South Africans should indeed be uniting and taking a greater stand against crime. It is something that has touched the lives of probably every South African. The stand against E tolling seems to have more support amongst all citizens of all colours than against crime - perhaps because we are an apathetic lot who find it easy when it is passive resistance - all it takes to protest about E tolling is to sit on our a*se and do nothing. Condolences to the family of the deceased lady - yet another family whose energy will go into mourning instead of buliding the nation.

Before taking him to the cells, take him "round the back" and teach him a lesson he will never forget, even if he gets out of jail.
