Johannesburg - Three alleged hijackers were arrested after a robbery spree in Boksburg and Germiston on Saturday morning, the Ekhuruleni Metro Police Department has said.

Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago in a statement said a couple was hijacked at gunpoint in the Boksburg CBD at about 06:00 and three men escaped with their black VW Polo Vivo.

“Following the activation of the [vehicle’s] tracking system, EMPD Intervention Unit members tracked the vehicle down to Roodekop in Germiston,” he said.

The car was found parked in Sunflower Street and when officers approached the car, three occupants “hastily alighted and bolted on foot”.

“All the suspects were apprehended after attempting to escape by scaling a few fences in the area.

“A 9mm pistol with its serial numbers filed off, four handbags, three purses and twelve cellphones were found in the hijacked vehicle. The trio admitted that they were robbing people in the Boksburg and Germiston area,” Kgasago said.

The trio, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested and charged by the Alberton police with possession of a stolen vehicle, an unlicenced firearm and suspected stolen property.

They will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
