Home Affairs officials nabbed for theft

2013-07-19 11:52

Pretoria - Two home affairs officials were arrested for theft in Pretoria on Friday, the Hawks said.

"The suspects were part of the mobile unit tasked with assisting school pupils to get IDs," said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

According to the Hawks the officials pocketed the R140 paid for identity documents, but did not process the applications.

Home affairs then received complaints, looked on its system, and discovered the applicants' information was not there.

"The matter was brought to us in June by the department and we started investigating. More arrests are expected," said Ramaloko.

They two were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday on theft charges.

  • Lehlogonolo Mukhola - 2013-07-19 11:59

The stories about home affairs are disgusting.

  • Henry Hattingh - 2013-07-19 12:01

Who can blame them ? They're just following the example set by our "president" . . . . .

      Anthony Kamp - 2013-07-19 12:19

. NO , every ince of Home Affairs was corrupted by those evil apartheid rulers!! IT WILL STILL TAKE YEARS AND YEARS, TO GET RID OF THIS MALAISE!!!!

      Peace Sol - 2013-07-19 12:27

He is not my president, and he doesn't represent me,as far as home affairs officials are concerned they learnt from Showerhead!

      Willem de Haan - 2013-07-19 12:39

Anthony my mate, either you are as cynical as I am or you are serious and stupid. Accepting that according to stated and applied ANC policy all public servants must be black and reading with that that the unit was mobile, I assume that the suspects were blacks stealing from black children. Twenty years down the line that has nothing to do with apartheid but a lot with loathsome callous criminal activity, commonly known as theft. By trying to shift the blame to apartheid you actually accept that this is a black disposition but shy away from responsibility for it, which definitely is a black disposition - always "the bus left me" never "My fault that I missed the bus."

      Lauren Potgieter - 2013-07-19 12:52

I think Anthony smokes too much mandrax. He also likes attention and to rile people up. He is best kept, ignored.

      Jonathan Woods - 2013-07-19 18:33

Calmly now Anthony, you will give yourself a stroke at this rate. Take your meds and get the good nurses to put you in your padded cell where you belong.

  • Abram Mothibedi Abram - 2013-07-19 12:05

this is disgusting indeed they will loose their jobs as well as benefits for a mere R140 rand!

      Koi Indarain - 2013-07-19 12:10

      R140 x 500 pupils in a highschool x lets say 3 schools per day x 5 days per week = Just over a cool million a week...

      Liz - 2013-07-19 12:13

How many R140 were pocketed? Why did they think they would never be caught?

      Willem de Haan - 2013-07-19 12:47

Liz, they sincerely believed that they were too clever to be caught, a common mistake made by the criminal element. Alternatively, they thought that they were not doing anything wrong, only taking what was rightly theirs - apparently a common approach in the NEW South African public "servant" who now believes he is the public master, underpaid and over-worked and therefore entitled to a small subsidy from the public - sometimes erroneously referred to by the Eurocentric minded whites as corruption whereas it is only a perk that goes with the position.

      Doep Briel - 2013-07-19 12:55

R140 for this new ID card!? They can keep it! I want no part of it. And it WILL be cloned. Just a matter of time...

      Babs Putar - 2013-07-19 12:56

Deservedly so. Thieves, but one cannot expect anything else when JZ and all his men have set the example

  • JMaree - 2013-07-19 12:13

    Phantsi CancER Phantsi!

      Jomo Kgomo - 2013-07-19 15:28

Keep on dreaming Marie ANC is here to stay and DevilsCancer is doing a very good by being so racist on this platform. Even those who started believing in DAsh have realized double standards played by its members.

  • Chabalala Grey Bongani - 2013-07-19 12:16

all d trouble for mere R140????.. idiots

      Jimmy Don - 2013-07-19 12:24

I can assure you sir that it was much more than a mere R140 bucks

      Rivashan Lee Sakaran - 2013-07-19 13:30

That's 140 per application. Say there's a 100 students that applies that's R14000 per school. Say that they serviced 5 schools that's R70000. And that's assuming a low number can you imagine the amounts if it were more real numbers such as 200 -300 students and a large amount of schools

      Mally Gee - 2013-07-20 22:38

@Chabalala, you've actually hit the nail on the head. It is the common belief held by the large majority of South Africans that it was “only R140” that is bringing this country to its knees; much like the rest of Africa. Even R10 stolen makes you a thief in no uncertain terms.

  • Keith Recore - 2013-07-19 12:16

one step forward, two steps back. The system of collusion of employees in government, thinking this is ok & the idea they won't get caught aids this type of fraud. Home Affairs has made strides, apparently can't rest for a while until it sorts out more of this type of rot. No matter what political party is governing, corruption will always be present, sadly, is a human defect. How easy or hard it is to be corrupt, however, can be addressed within government to try to rid it quickly, with visible, stiff penalties.

  • Christina Setloboko - 2013-07-19 12:18

    all corrupt top to bottom.mmm

  • Sergio Da Costa - 2013-07-19 12:22

uhhh...can still make out blurred ID number

  • Sipho Mnguni - 2013-07-19 12:29

Daily Sun newspaper was not way off the mark when it names this rotten department "Horror Affairs. Those poor kids would've waited forever for the identity documents that would've come. Good riddance to bad rubbish. May they enjoy their stay in prison!

  • Sontshatsha Kwezi - 2013-07-19 12:30

We are all dreaming of Nkandlagate in our homes, but stealing R140 is little bit stupid.

      WildCatSal - 2013-07-19 12:41

Read again. Per application R140. Mobile Unit. Schools. Think.. How many where "processed"

      WildCatSal - 2013-07-19 13:00

Hello.. Stealing ANYTHING is stupid! Stupid is as Stupid does..

      Mally Gee - 2013-07-20 22:42

Well Sontshatsha, it is that very belief that you and 90% of South African hold, that is so very ignorant and utterly stupid. Only when that attitude changes will prosperity return to the people of this land.

  • Benjamin Franklin - 2013-07-19 12:33

Personally I think that home affairs has improved in leaps and bounds! Their processes are much better which is evident when you received your documents alot quicker. I think we should be happy that they're catching these corrupt officials and getting rid of them. Let's give credit where it's due! Keep up the good work Home Affairs and The Hawks!

      Tebogo Steve Rababalela - 2013-07-19 15:58

It can b that one moment in order to pretend they can root out corruption. They must start frm the top and show us they can b faithful sometimes in order to convince us.

  • Marc Anthony Webb - 2013-07-19 12:33

@ Anthony Kamp to put things in perspective I am going to have to tell you a story about the Ant(Old Evil National Party)and the Locust(ANC current evil party)when it came to planting and harvesting each season the Ant worked hard and dilligently and made sure the crop was a success, leaving enough for all to eat,he also ensured there was some put aside for next season to continue. Now the locust sat on his ass and did squat and demanded all the time providing nothing of real value. The short of the story is nothing is for free and it takes hard work to succeed.

      Benjamin Franklin - 2013-07-19 12:40

Thanks for endorsing apartheid! Somehow I feel these forums are for pro-apartheid members of South Africa. I'm sure you guys sit around thinking fondly about the old days when Black people were treated so badly. Catch a wake up people!

      Babs Putar - 2013-07-19 12:59

Waste of time, Anthony wouldn't know what your are talking about. Fast asleep in lala land

No one wants to know what the Nats did anymore.... Stupid story! They were a bunch of useless racists and they don't deserve our time or thought... Our concern is for what's happening now! You're as bad as the government who blames all there corruption and mismanagement on apartheid... Get over it, or get out!

  • Koi Indarain - 2013-07-19 12:44

As far as I know - your 1st ID book is free of charge. To have one reissued costs R140...

  • Sean Bagley - 2013-07-19 12:48

Stealing is a disease with these people in power and is very contagious and the cadres are the most susceptible in caching the virus. They will have you believe that they've gone without it for so long,so they will take whatever the can get their claws on.

  • Neil Roberts - 2013-07-19 13:29

It used to be a major sin to commit fraud in the Public Service. Are the transgressors ever dismissed or do they just apply elsewhere.

      WildCatSal - 2013-07-19 22:33

Neil, they are reshuffled like the deck chairs of the Titanic.

  • Mahomed Mather - 2013-07-19 13:33

I thought that your first ID was issued free of charge and this being school kids, this would most likely be their first ID. They will get suspended while the investigation is being done, but they still will get paid.
