Horrific bus crash leaves 9 dead

2012-06-02 11:20

Johannesburg - Nine people died and 45 others were injured when a minibus taxi collided with a bus on Saturday near Nelspruit, in Mpumalanga, paramedics said.

"The death toll might rise as the bus is still on its side," ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said.

The accident happened shortly after 07:00 on the R40 between White River and Nelspruit.

The bus and taxi both came to a rest on the side of the road.

Of those injured, 12 were critical, 10 were in a serious condition, and 23 sustained moderately injuries, said Banks.

No further details were available.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE TAXI RE-CAPITALIZATION PROCESS? I blame government for their SLOW actions and corrupt law enforcement officials. Condolences to the families of the deceased.

haha! it's a painful mistake. Hard to read without bursting out laughing while reading such a serious article.

Let us not forget that the Taxi's re free from prosecution. They continue to slaughter on our roads but have carte blanche as long as they do this in peak hours. Cannot remember when last I read about a slaughte ron the roads not involving a taxi.

      ReaperAJ - 2012-06-02 11:44

well Richard, this is a very sad thing. But, it's one taxi down, many more to go. Surely they must eventually wipe themselves out at this rate? Unfortunately, many innocent lives are sacrificed during this process. At least every time one taxi goes down, it costs the taxi owner a small fortune to replace it. Insurance must be costly considering the frequency of accidents. So I'm assuming it's getting tough for them to keep up at this rate. Let's just hope so, seeing as there is nothing else to do.

Counting the news headlines today and the tally is 17 dead today alone and that is up to 15h00. Taxis are by far the major cause of todays total. In any other country - even in the USA with a population 6X greater than SA, this would be an horrific day and headlines would rage for days about this. In this country our officials shrug their shoulders with mild concern and continue to obsess about a picture of Zuma's schlong.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-02 17:53

These okes must be taken off our roads

  • gailcarolynhayes - 2012-06-02 19:51

Sympathies to the families of all those involved. Every time I hear about another one which is like every other day I can't help thinking that the families of these tragedies should vote against a Govt which is unequal to the task of restoring a safe and reliable Public transport system in place of these subsidised death traps which rule our majority. WHY don't the people who have no options burn the taxis for a change. They are a lot less safe than trains and cheaper to replace and they are only in it for the money or they would self regulate.

  • silinda.nelson1 - 2012-06-02 19:55

What a horrific scene to see , it was so scary there. I nvr saw something lyk this in ma lyf and i dnt want to ever wtns such a thing in ma lyf.

  • themba.ntuli - 2012-06-02 21:15

The N4 around the nelspruit region is one of the best highways in the country, both in terms of engeneering and viewing sights or natural beauty that it provides. given that it is also one of the most dangerous roads in the country, i know because i was also involved in an accident there involving a greyhound dreamliner bus last december but the mozambiquen driver of the van we collided with never made it, that van stalled on a rainy night and our bus just smashed into it while its occupants where trying to start it by pushing!! horrific thing to see and experience, accidents are realy disturbing infact more scary than earthquake.
